Interesting, thanks Chuck. i always wondered if a 92 had been produced, if it would have been a GT (from 91) or a GTS. I got my answer. Do you know why it took another year for the GTS to make it to North america?
James Morrison will jump in here no doubt, but short version is Porsche still had an unexpectedly large number of '91s to sell out before introducing the GTS in United States. Not like they could unload them to Hertz or anything ;-)
I believe some number of these 'extras' were re-exported to Japan and elsewhere where more favorable market conditions and exchange rates gave them a better chance to sell the cars.
GTS went on sale in U.S. in '92 as '93 MY once Porsche was ready to replace the S4 in showrooms. Would be interesting to know how often this scenario might have been used by other manufacturers, I would suspect it's a fairly unusual piece of automotive history.
There was a pretty serious (though nothing like we have right now!) economic recession all over the world but mostly in the US in the early '90's so it was tough to sell the most expensive non-911 Turbo car Porsche had. There were lots left, just like yours Bertrand, so they put off the GTS as long as they could here. Then called it a '93 model.
There were 9XX ROW '92's produced I think Erkka says (but I can't remember the exact number and maybe it was 7XX...I think it was 9XX though) but the NHTSA only has record of TWO ever being in the US. Mine (which is still here) and Schoki's which was here for his 3 year tour of duty with the German Air Force in Wichita Falls, TX. His car was on a temporary import permit for 3 years (or was it 2???) and at the end of that time his car was going to have to go back to Germany, be fully converted to US specs or crushed...his duty ended and back to Germany he and his car went.
That leaves my '92 as the only US registered unit. You can bring one in but it is (now more than ever) CRAZY EXPENSIVE! It was bad enough when I did it with a favorable exchange rate to buy the car initially but now that is LONG GONE and I am fairly certain there are fewer new 928 cats out there and the other mods certainly have not become cheaper either. SO, today I would guess a cool $15k just on the conversion/registration...maybe closer to $20k... Then you have to add the cost of the car on top of that!
It would have to be SOME KIND OF SPECIAL GTS to bother importing one from Germany (or anywhere else) these days!
OTOH it might not be all that hard to slip a ROW GTS in through Canada and into a easy registration US state. You would need a resident of Canada to get the 928 imported and registered in Canada to them.

955 1992, 621 1993, 523 1994 and 399 1995 ROW models resulting 2498 cars made. Count contains 88 early VIN 1993, 102 late VIN 1993, 19 + 120 1994 and 77 1995 US models resulting 406 cars made
FWIW, I know Nicole said at one time that a lot of the GTS' were used by Porsche executives--so I assumed stayed in Germany. Here on the German PFF web site, they quote the official central german car register in Flensburg "Kraftfahrtbundesamt - KBA" as (note, PS is horse power):

TSN 394 310 PS - 179 (S)
TSN 402 288 PS - 36 (S)
TSN 404 320 PS - 527 (S4)

Good luck with that... It is still going to show up in big bright lights to the FED's my friend! That has been tried before... FAIL! If that would have worked don't you think Bill Gates and others would have been smart enough to buy/bring their McLaren F1's and 959's through Canada?! BTW, when you go to title the car you have to show proof of conformation to EPA/DOT requirements...THAT is what costs so much!
Bruce, good info there and I agree about many more GTS's in Germany... I never see GTS's (other than mine) on the road and I was only in Germany for about 2 weeks and saw TWO of them on the streets! Oh, one of them was Iris Blue to boot!
I am aware of another 1992 Euro GTS in FL with a Strostek kit. Murph was helping fit an SC kit to it so he may know more than I do.

All I can tell you is that unless it was brought in within the last 10 months or so it is here illegally or is not actually a '92... The NHTSA did a full review of all records for me and mine and Shocki's were the only ones that showed up.
If it is a VIN: WP0ZZZ92Z *N* S... Then it is in fact a '92 (the "N" being the operative letter) and again unless it got here within the last 10 months it is not here legally...

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought that it might be about that car. It is a '92 GTS Strosek, and was imported from Germany. It's getting a new engine built for it, and then getting a Murf stage-3 supercharger kit installed. The shop that's doing the work is in Florida, but the owner's primary residence is in another area of the country.
