49 CFR 591.5 Declarations required for importation.

(i)(1) The vehicle is 25 or more years old.

To my knowledge there was no such thing as a '92 Porsche 928. The GTS was released for sale to the public in 1992 and I was told by the original owner [the main dealer here] that my example was one of the first ones delivered- it was registered for the road in August 92.

One thing I feel is that the build quality of my GTS is not as good as my late 1990 S4 was. at least not with respect to the interior trim. I also feel that Porsche rushed the GTS out a bit premature and did not think things out as well as they should have. They did not change the GTS rod spec for nothing. They also have oil burning issues and I have seen a bulletin they issued advising dealers to modify the engines if owners complained of the excessive oil consumption [no drain holes in the oil scraper ring land] but no general recall to fix it. The survival rate of the 93 GTS engines that arrived here has not been good at all as I can tell.

Another point I note is that my GTS was supplied with a R12 filled a/c system. For some weird reason I believe they changed this halfway through the 1993 model year run- somewhat unusual I would suggest. Just floating something here - Could it be they gaffed in that R12 models were not allowed to be imported to the States at that time hence no import for a while until they fixed the gaff? Has anyone seen a GTS originally supplied with R12 that was imported to the States?

Regards

Fred

Hi Fred,
Plenty of 92 GTS cars out there.
Here in the States the 92 cars were held back because there were to many 91 cars sitting on showroom floors. First cars into the States were called early 93 and were still R12. Late 93 were real 93 cars and had R134a. Plenty of early 93 (92) USA delivered cars with R12 here.

So all we have to do is buy up all the '92 GTS in Germany and wait 5 years to bring them over here? Sounds like a plan.

I'm happy with what I got, and can't see a big difference other than the wider *** end of the later cars. Seems to me the later cars had lousey engines.

Have you checked the exchange rate and pricing?! WOW! Not a very good idea even if you could bring them here w/o having to do any mods for DOT/EPA. I keep an eye out over there because there are a few EURO GTS's I am looking for, but let me tell you they are EXPENSIVE! Most of them are more than our '93's and have WAY more and WAY HARDER miles on them! Talk about being ridden hard and put up wet! YOWZA!

It is a good time to live there and use your Euro's to buy GTS's (or any 928's) here and take them over there... that is part of the reason why Kermit is back in Germany (much to my chagrin I might add ;-)...

Like Nick Nolte, you've just gotta let 1992 go...
