'Over the winter and this spring the car lost enough power that it would not spin the tires even in first unless I revved it up and dropped the clutch.'

I think I know why the clutch finally gave out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andy
How's your clutch holding out? Are you running the GTS clutch or something after market?

So it's either a bad brain or a short in the harness.

We had a horrible time installing the ST2 PEMS. After the 3rd LH PEM Jim sent a known working LH with PEMs with the S4 maps. The new as been working so far AND (just seat of the pants) the car has gotten back the power that was missing. For example last summer the car used to be able to spin the tires with full throttle just cruising in 2nd gear. Over the winter and this spring the car lost enough power that it would not spin the tires even in first unless I revved it up and dropped the clutch. After the new LH it now spins the tires in 2nd gear rolling by just putting the accelerator into the firewall. That is the increase in power referred to above.

The best that Jim and my mechanic can figure is that whatever is causing the PEMs to not work with my brain is causing the loss in power.
I've seen/had rebuilt brains that will only work with stock chips. None of the aftermarket chips will function in these brains.

Wouldn't swapping in a known good brain rule out a short in the harness?

As far as we know it is the stock brain that doesn't like the PEMs.

So, are you saying the stock ECUs need to be modified to accept the PEMs?

Nope, stock LH and EZK brains should work fine with the PEMs, they're 'plug n' play'. IIRC part of the PEM issues with rebuilt brains were specific to those re-built by Rich Andrade (and maybe other rebuilders? Correct me if I'm wrong and I'll change this....)

BUT- There's a recent thread where Rich confirmed that his current rebuild methods renders them COMPATIBLE with PEMs.

Here it is:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...this-chip.html

I have a John Speake-rebuilt LH brain in the GTS with PEMs in it, and they work just fine.

Thanks for the clarification. Will install PEMS into my LH and EZK in the near future. My ECUs are not rebuilt, so I should not expect any issues then. Great!

The problem with RDK's car does appear to be a faulty LH ECU. His original LH also managed to damage a couple of PEMs for some reason.

He is now running with a loner LH with PEM installed, but it would run just as well with the stock LH EPROM. When he SharkTunes the PEM, then there will be more power and better throttle response.

All "good" stock LH work fine with PEMs. All rebuilds now work OK with PEMs. There was a period when one rebuilder's LH would not work with PEMs or tools like the Hammer as the K data line was not configured correctly. I am told that issue has now been resolved.
