Newbie with an 83 16v Need TB/WP change asap
Hello all,
New here and will attempt to embark on TB/WP some rollers etc. Engine started tooverheat on the highway. I was cruising in 4th gear at 3,000 RPM. So started to pull over and BOOM. No power, it instantly dropped off and I rolled onto the grass with hazards on. Tried to start but nothing. Had the free spining feeling like all spark plug was out of the cylinders. Attempting to upload the gruesome pics.

I envy you. I don't sleep much at night anymore knowing that my S4 is due for a timing belt service once I save up for the parts to do DIY. You 16-valve guys can just put a new belt on and go, albeit you have a US car and not an ROW.

Yeah I need some guidance. I performed a TB/WP on my audi A6 6Spd 2001 model about 5 yrs ago and that was a new experience.

This is the car version of 'death is nature's way of telling you to slow down'.
Good luck. Lots of new parts coming your way. Follow the Pirtle or Dwayne belt change process, with small mods for the 16v vs 32v differences - worked for me as a newbie.

How do I know the cams are aligned before I place the belt back on and how do I move them? The right side ( pass side ) Has no marking that I can see yet. I will disassemble this Saturday. Unfortunately I don't have the manual. Awaiting the CD versions delivery.

Just retension the belt and keep driving - what's a few parts between friends 8>).
As already mentioned read John Pirtle's TB write up and you will be 90% there.
Need parts give me a call - I have a few.
New belt and cam gears are certainly in your future.

There will be nicks on the back of the cam wheels, and there are cast markers on the rear of the belt housing - in fact in your fist pic there is what looks like some white paint on the front face of the gear - if the rear face has a V cut in it opposite that white, thats the marker. Also on the casing of the dizzy, inside the area covered by the belt cover, there is a lug that is a bit left of the white mark, IIRC thats the marker. There is a similar marker on the other cam wheel area......its early days yet. Dont dissassemble ANYTHING until you know what and where everything is, and you have a plan in place, and start building a list of parts needed - this will grow as you dig into it.

I would venture a guess that the water pump has seized change out the coolant while in there

Yes I think you venture would be correct. The chain of events leads me to believe that as well. The sudden rise in temp, the oily smell of something burning and then lose of power. I think I heard a belt squiling as well. This is my 1st 928 so I will be baptised. I am mechanically inclined with guidance. I have been searching fo rthe TB/WP right ups mentioned earlier in my post but have no luck locating it. Any clearer diection to them so I can print out the directions? Thanks in advance.
Side note. How do I add the pic of my car under my name as well as the other cars I have?
