I do not enjoy "showing " cars and I thought that taking this car to Rennsport was going to be really boring.

Once I got there and I saw that there was a "sea' of horizontally opposed 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder vehicles and only one vehicle that had spark plugs that pointed vertically, it became more interesting. It was a little bit overwhelming to be included in a tent with the famous 917s, 962s, and other factory race cars.

The highlight of the weekend, for me, was when Alvin Springer (who seemed like he always hated these cars and favored the 6 cylinder race cars), walked up to me and told me that this lowly 944 GTR was the "best car here."

Made the effort worthwhile, for me.

Very cool. I've only seen it from outside the bubble when in the shop. Super great to see pics of the engine, suspension, etc. It's no longer engineering, it is art. I hope no one ever starts the thing. ITs more than a time capsule, it really is what Porsche could have, should have done. They'd be five times the company they are today. 911=VHS, 924/944/928 = Betamax. The best does not always survive.

Hard to not agree.

Imagine what one of those "tubs" would be like with the torque/horsepower of a 928 Stroker Engine.

Would have eliminated the need for a $350,000 962 engine in a $500,000 chassis?

Howard Meister always claimed that he spent 1.2 million dollars on engines for his 962, the last year he ran the car.....

Wow! Can't imagine the hours it took to put it all together.
The alternator in the back is super neat too.

Wasn't this already done somewhat by a well known race fabricator? They built up a 944 chassis with a stroker 928 engine. Thought they were having driveline issues going uphill at a race course and then they found it was the rear tires breaking loose from all the power. That creation is now parked and in mothballs IIRC.
