For you guys heading south on 5, know that it is closed down to one lane at HWY 58 and again at Hwy 119. I plan to go 33 from 46 at Blackwells Corner, a little west of Lost Hills all the way to Maricopa, then to 5. Or, takes Rob's scenic route...
Last time I was on 5, it added over an hour sitting in stop-go traffic... FWIW..
Google maps on your smartphone may give you advance warning to go with a detour.

Just got into the hotel with Tom M, Chris, and ATB.
Long drive from BC! We had two problems en route.
Just not of Seattle my clutch fluid drained out. I topped up and got to Tom's. But the next morning gone again. I had to drive Olympia to the hotel with no clutch. Including Sacramento rush hour......
Chris had his centering pin for his rear universal back out.

Just to resurrect an old thread with new info...
I drove HWY 33 from the HWY 41 intersection yesterday on my way home from memorial day. It's improved substantially. The section between 41 and 46 is all nice tarmac. The section between 46 and Taft still has some rough spots but none of the "craters" are still there. I encountered 2 small potholes but nothing scary. The tarmac on this stretch is still spotty; it's mostly old but there are 100 yard stretches of new asphalt that's very nice; this is probably where the craters were.
Still a word of warning about the area: there's nobody out there, and services are few and far between. I drove it for a little over an hour and encountered exactly one car going in my direction. The road has no shoulder. Six inches outside the white line there is either sage brush, a steep drainage gully, or both. If you breakdown you won't be able to get off the road. There are a couple of sections with signs warning that it is subject to flooding, so don't consider it during or soon after a storm.
But the condition of the road itself is no longer a concern.
