In my mind it is a stewardship just as much as ownership.

I have to give kudos to the OP ... not many people realise this, ever. But many are over their heads in owning a car like this. It is very complicated. I saw an ad for a Ferrari (I forgot the model) recently -- something like 28k miles, and already has new valve guides.

Supercars are complicated, expensive and need much maintenance.

There are many things that can be done to a 928 to make it as reliable as any other car. Once it is, nothing more than oil changes and regular inspection / service interval maintenance are needed.

BUT

Many buy an old, worn-out car and never actually realise they were never able to handle that much work and expense in the first place.

This car is definitely in my blood. From the jaw dropping moment I saw it for the first time in my late teens in the 80's, I yearned for the day I could own one. 20+ years later it is now a reality. I sometimes open the front door just to look out on the driveway to look at it and smile. The love for the car and the "want" to drive it is definitely there.
The reality is that we live in tough times where every dollar spent is scrutinized by some of us. You have to balance the cost whether to satisfy the emotional need vs. the practical needs especially with a growing family. Also we all age we develop physical limitations which also play a factor.
I was hoping to get this car ready to drive to Sharktoberfest to meet all of you great people who provide so much inspiration and support to each other as well as the newer owners. Let's see how it goes.
Thanks very much for your guidance. You guys rock.

You don't need your car done to go to Sharktober fest!

If it isn't ready going will give you a big boost and you will meet a great bunch of folks!

You really should contact Bill Ball. He's full of 928 know how, has offered to lend you a hand, lives only 30 miles away, and is a great guy T

There's an even chance that you don't need a new PS hose if the leak, like mine, is from the bottom of the reservoir. I fixed mine in 10 minutes 7 years ago and it's not leaked since.

I've been fixing 928s since about '87 or so, and have done most of the tasks that normally ever need doing. Still feel like throwing in the towel from time to time. All this last weekend, in fact. Generally it passes in time.

Can remember a couple of long evenings limbo dancing under my old 928 to change that line, overalls stained in ATF fluid, and convinced I would never get the new line routed correctly and everything buttoned up. But oh the satisfaction when it did magically fall into place, and a long-standing annoying leak was fixed.

You have started at deep end with that job. If you start with the more straightforward stuff then you can build your confidence, tool collection, and knowledge of tips to get round problems that can come up working on any older vehicle.

It's a thrill too repeating a job you may have spent ages on once (or maybe done once on other side like a suspension or door job) and just gliding through it with knowledge gained.

Now I look forward to doing a new job on my S4, researching in advance, reading write ups and tips from some of the expert and generous 928 jedis here. I get as much pleasure completing a job properly as driving the damn thing, and it sounds corny but it brings you closer to the car.

If you've had enough then follow your instincts, but it's extraordinary how a job that was impossible when you walked away is a cinch when you return to the car next day.

To quote one of our RL members:

I want street rods.
I want cars that glimmer in the sun, and whose curves make me drop my jaw every time I see them ... even if it is everyday.
I want enough power to outrun any and all Chevy pickups that try to forge past me when I'm entering a freeway.
I want enough power to take that spot in the fast lane next to me, when I turn my blinker on, and not be outgunned by the guy way back there who thinks a lane changer signal means "close ranks".
I want leather all around me, and if I can have leather underpants, that too.
I want a car that sticks to pavement like bubblegum, even though it's 3500lbs, and outbrakes anything else out there, especially when I've dropped the ball and have to correct for my own stupidity.
I want a rear-end that will get down onto its haunches around a decreasing radius turn, not slip out when I lift the throttle to slow down or just because I like the whine of deceleration.
I want to be able to get out on Route 66 and fly for several hours through the nondescript desert at 160mph while chatting with my child in the back seat. Something that will run past 150,000 miles and not even start to feel aged.
I want a car with so much blue blood in it, that every time I drive it, I burst into tears with enjoyment.

I want a Porsche 928.

If there's anything I learned about my love affair with the 928's is that it IS a love affair! You know that girl is trouble. Your friends tell you that girl is trouble. Your brother tells you that girl is trouble. Your priest tells you that girl is trouble. And yet... You asked her out anyway.
So now, you have a 928 in your garage. She's moody, she's on permanent PMS and she makes a scene in front of your friends by breaking down on a Saturday afternoon drive to the park. But... It's a love affair, she's like opium on a satin bed.
The only thing you can do to get over her is to go to a 928 addiction 12 step process. But you have to cross "The Nile" 1st.
But then again, why you would announce your rehabilitation enlightenment to a room full addicts, unless it is only to want us to "DRAG YOU BACK IN!!!"
