Nice color. How is the interior?
Might be interested if you think of selling your “stated” daily driver as-is....

Best of luck.

Well you beat my price by 600.00. Mine had bent valves from a belt failure. I already have another engine for mine. If you had bent valves, you would know it. Mine would barely run enough to get it off the trailer and into the garage. If it runs then it is probably just an issue with sitting. Also, if gas came out of the regulators, they are bad and should be replaced. I would do the intake r&r and see how she runs. I think you will be surprised just how good a deal you got.

Best of luck, I hope to have mine back together in a few weeks. Can't wait...

You couldn't go wrong with the price you paid, drive it and fix it up as you can, too nice to quit!

If it is drivable I would drive it a bit to see if any issues become more clear or resolve themselves. If not, I would look for a motor. You can probably pick up a good used motor for less than the cost of a new set of rings and gasket set.

Sorry but the logic eludes me....the BIG question is the coolant situation and the poor compression which is highly unlikely to be "stuck rings" .

do a leak down test to determine where the compression is going.......

That is a very good bit of advice.

You have some compression so I rather doubt bent valves, but you won't know what you have until you open up the motor. Cosmetically the car looks pretty decent and no rub strips, etc. - that's a major positive, as cosmetic refurb is a huge waste of money (Oops! I see you do have some pod and dash cracks. Oh, well.). Fix/replace the motor.

Hollister? That's a long way from Bloomfield, MI.

I would try and get a sound engine from one of the vendors (I think Brent at The Nine Source has one) and do a swap. Then you and the boys can have some fun and tear down the motor and use it for parts. My guess is it has a blown head gasket and a pitted cylinder. The PO must have known this due to the fact the rad was empty and kept it quiet which kind of sucks considering he is on Rennlist.

Looks good all cleaned up! Maybe leave the engine as-is, could act as a speed limiting device for the young lads.

If you are looking for an engine, contact Mark Benton at the nine source. He understands the 86 very well as he has one for a race car.

Good luck,

Also I should note, I would not recommend running the engine with that low compression.
If it is bent valves (likely), it is possible that the valve will snap the head off and then you will be out a block/piston/head....

Thank you all for the great suggestions, we are going to pull the eng, remove the heads and see what we got to work with. I'm thinking I'll end up having to pull it even if I replace it with a used eng.

Here are some mor pic's:
This was all that came out of the rad when it was drained.
Intake all ready to go back on
Eng is almost ready to come out anyway.

I have to make an effort to up date this post, as the eng I purchased from 928 Intenational is almost ready to go back in along with a boat load of new and updated parts.

so this story went from "pulling old engine to diagnose" to "new engine is ready to go in".

what happened in between? what did you find wrong with the old engine?
