Clutch Removal - 90' GT
Going to take out the engine of my 90' GT and I wonder if there are any good writeups on the removal of the clutch?
Ive done the obligatory search and checked the FAQ and DIY section, but no results.
Cheers!

Please cc your PM to the entirety of the 928 board so that future queries looking for such info can find it. Or you could just post it here. I will supplement with pics that I have, I have just never put together the complete protocol.
The gross overview is:
1. Drop exhaust (unless someone was in there before and was kind enough to leave the rearmost lower bellhousing cover bolts out)
2. Unbolt clutch slave cylinder bolts
3. Remove lower bellhousing cover
4. Rotate engine (clockwise, looking from the front, using a 27 mm socket on the crank bolt) until 1 of the 3places to insert shims becomes visible. Here's where the shim will go:
5. Get a bigass pry bar, put the tip against the underside of the guide tube, and the 'elbow' of the bar against the forward side of the clutch release arm. With one hand push the bar (and release arm) towards the rear of the car, which will open up the gap shown in the pic above. Slide a shim in.
6. Rotate engine 120o, insert another shim. Do this 2x.
7. Now the PP is shimmed and the release arm should be sorta loose. Keep its upper end sitting/hanging on the pivot ball, and you can unbolt the PP assembly. Then move the arm off the ball and drop the 45-ish pound assembly onto your chest. Have a piece of cardboard on your chest to catch it or you will get a traumatic tattoo of the starter teeth.
Once everything is apart, the Pressure plate shimming/assembly and clutch re-installation is outlined in this thread:

I am technically (computer) challanged. It is telling me that the files are too big to upload. Also these were sent to me by other people and I do not remeber their names, so I don't know whether they will mind me sharing these.

I simply need drop my clutch in order the deal with a troublesome Crank Position Sensor. As I will not be servicing the clutch are the SHIMs mentioned in post 3 required in order to remove the clutch?

Three Wheelin'
Just follow the manual for clutch removal... for me it was that simple. Those shims take the preload off the pressure plate and make disassembly easier. As soon as that clutch (hopefully doesn't) drops on your face, you won't be able to remove them.

Lizard931, You are saying that a single disk 88 S4 does not have this issue? Is another trick required?
and yes, the fly wheel will be the next little item to deal with.
Safe to say this is a low point in my 928 experience.

You will need a special tool to remove the flywheel. You must have a good quality "triple square" XZN bit socket. Get a set, as there are a few other places on the 928 that require the triple square bits. Cheap XZN sets are available - I would suggest a good set, not a cheap one. Amazon has several choices, but there are other sources.
