What is the best gear oil to use in my 1981 5 speed lsd transmission, I have read on this post that redline synthetic is most recomended, however I dont know what which of the three are the correct, ls, mtl, or mt90, Thanks for any advice

You should try to get the code off of your transmission, or lift the back and find out whether it is limited slip or not. That dictates the need for 'sliperiness' in the gear oil to ensure good lubrication but also functioning synchros. Many folks blend to get the right mix. Redline is good for that, and I expect Torco would also develop a following if folks tried it. Here's some commentary from a websearch:

My 78 had lots of grinding issues - changed to Royal Purple and it improved greatly, however I beleive I can get it even better by using a mix of Redline 75W 90 NS GL5 & 75W 90 GL5 - 3 x NS to 2 x Plain on an LSD car.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Thanks Rog, I am going to try the redline NS. I dont know what was in my tranny before I changed it last week, I decided to change it and I used non synthetic 80-90 and this morning I drove it and my tranny is grinding in a few gears. Sometimes I wonder why I just dont leave well enough alone, (if it aint broke dont f*** with it
