It's an engine mount shock absorber/vibration damper. There's one on each side. I think it's debatable as to whether they are really necessary, but they're quite cheap so I've retained them on mine. If they're still OK they'll have resistance like a standard suspension shock.

BTW ... your steering rack doesn't look happy.

It dampens vibrations. Those engine mounts are solid. The later hydraulic mounts performed that function internally.

I replaced the mounts with stock pieces and the shocks. Smooth a silk.
