Default Seeking Opinions Part 2, 1978 5 Speed

Thanks for your comments on the last 928 (84 auto) I asked about. Today a 78 popped up. This car has some nice pluses!

first year
5 speed
69k miles
no sunroof
Documented (though I have not seen this yet) recent timing belt and clutch.
Nice paint (repaint) and seemingly flaw free body
Crackless dash (few pod cracks)

Not perfect of course, but one of the nicer ones Ive seen.
Ac is inop
tires seem old
engine was a little rough but not terrible.
Shifter felt a tad sloppy.

Here are the pics. Enjoy! Let me know what you think.

Looks pretty nice. Paint has been redone but it looks like some care has been taken. Interior is quite nice for the age.

If it is running a bit rough then you should find out how much it has been driven lately. Lots of issues with these injection systems sort themselves out with a bit of run time. Worst case, you might be looking at a WUR ($200-$300 rebuilt), and a set of plug wires.

AC might just need a charge. Even with no leaks, they will loose enough freon in 5 to 10 years to go away. I recently charged my '79 after it had been inop for 10 or 15 years and it came right up and works perfectly. The tricky part would be finding the R12.

Sloppy shifter might be some hard work or some easy work, depending on where the problem is and how you go about fixing it, but nothing serious on the parts cost side.

The main thing would be to make sure you are happy with the level of performance of a '78. You would not want to buy this and then realize you really want 32 valve peformance, bigger brakes, etc.

Depends on the price. It looks pretty good in the pictures.
My 79 is plenty fast and fun for me. Can't say what it would be like without the PO's mods though. But what I have -- is all the fun I need. BTW, I've had two S4's before and can't say they were so much more fast or fun because frankly they weren't. Something needs to be said about non interference and less stuff to break. Let's not forgert that the OB's had superior build quality and materials too. All 928's rock, but OB's are AWSOME! Just can't beat the bang for the buck no matter what make/model/year you can think of.

the car looks nice , paint is good the wheels are the more desirable 16in.
too bad they put an S front spoiler on the front ,
the original bumper is uncut for the spoiler.
Interior looks about right for wear
I would figure it has original shocks tossing on a set of Bilstiens will make it ride a bit firmer but it will be fun

I would suggest forgetting about that. Materials, in particular the interior vinyl, was far from superior. The reason I believe many most early panels were covered with leather (they actually covered the processed vinyl!). Wasn't until 85'ish the the vinyl started coming back.
My opinion is the later interiors will hold up better than the early ones.

I believe overall build quality stayed the same throughout the production run.

i would say thats a fair price if the timing belt receipts check out. But obviously if you can get it for less the better.

Looks very nice. Not comparable to the previous one. The S-spoiler shouldn't be there and the center console is leather where the dash is vinyl. Windows look tinted, which is not my favorite but I guess it's helpful in Arizona Don't like the fancy badge between the window switches. Exhaust looks aftermarket. You will need to take up close and personal inspection, but it looks nice. If there is room to negotiate, even better.

Looks good.. I agree with Aryan...the dash and pod have likely been replaced (probably was brown leather that got destroyed in the AZ sun).. Overall looks like a nice OB (yes true OB)... now if you buy it, you'll have to take off that front spoiler..and talk to Paul Champagne about getting the interior back to all brown leather ..

P.S..I've always hated that Ansa exhaust...the pipes should point to the side...not side and back... (but that's just a picky point)

another plus are the H4 euro lights..Nice..
