I can't imagine going to a government department and actually getting a sign without it being an long, drawn out exercise in futility. Government today is different from when you built A Gas cars.

You can go to a sign company run by real people and buy aluminum sheet.

BC, the best starting place for answering your original question is for you to tell us exactly what you had in mind to do in the first place. What exsactly was you Plan A, B or C? With that, we can get an idea of just what your skill level is so some help can be suggested that is within your capabilities. For example, can you weld? Do you have an oxy-acetelene welding torch by any chance? Can you use one if you could get one? Have you ever welded sheet steel in the gauge found in car bodies? Have you ever done any auto body work?

When I find myself trying to tell you how I would fill in that gaping hole left by the removal of the sunroof I am first going to suggest that you need to take the windshield out again. You are going to need to be sitting in the windshield opening to fix this the way I suggest, if you think you are capable of some of the craft needed to get the job done right.

It has already been asked, but what level of finish are you hoping to achieve with this project?

I'll loook foreward to seeing what you have in mind.

I appreciate your response Jerry. The windshield is now in. And from what I learned from the installer about the material used, its permanently in.

Plan A was to somehow weld in the original panel like some people have done.
That will not be done, as its too heavy, and it will be too difficult to deal with the paint, etc.

Plan B is to use the high tech BMW or german auto-body glue and install either a Carbon Fiber or Aluminum panel. How it looks would not be a main concern for me right now.

Plan C is to use some small screws and screw the same down to the body

If I was going to weld something else in, I would have waited on the windshield, taken off the entire roof, and welded in a non-sunroof panel and that job would have taken weeks for me.

I do and have welded before, including on these bodies. I am okay, but not great. I need more practice. But it will not be on this car roof.

Looks like you are heading to the sheet metal route. Our local PCA Track Chair drives a track 928 and he put in polycarbonate - problem was that it expanded and contracted at a different rate than the sheet metal so that it constantly leaked and looked hideous. I would either rivet it in place or better yet, weld it in place to make it permanent.

Livio - that is a concern. That link I posted seems to indicate BMW's adhesive is good for that.

I was going to say that this thread is a train wreck, then I reconsidered and decided that the thread is ok, it is this project that is a train wreck. So sad for what might have been a nice 928.

Brendan is a fairly large human being...tall.

I'm pretty sure that he is doing this because he doesn't fit into the vehicle without the seat being reclined, well into the rear seat area.

Thanks Greg. I can understand that. What tells me this is a train wreck is that he cut all of the sunroof structure out and had a new windshield put in without ANY consideration about what he was going to do with the hole left, and then posted this thread. That is what spells train wreck. He is at best going to end up with a 928 with a big gob of flat wrap sheet metal or plastic of some sort covering up the hole and driving around with that until he is through with this 928. Then it is pure junk.

He didn't even have much thought about paint. That is incredulous.

This project is a train wreck.

If this guy were some kind of giant who liked to be comfortabloe driving his 928, at least I would have thought he would have given some thought to how to form a suitable Plexiglas dome to fit up in the sunroof opening so he could sit upright to drive it. Even that didn''t take place here.

I think the stock in Duct Tape is going to go up because that is going to be the saving grace for this OP in respect to keeping something in place to cover the opening he has left until he figures out what to do to properly correct it.

Train wreck.

It would be a fun and doable CF project as far as CF projects go. If you want to dive into CF I could offer some ideas. The most work would be rounding up supplies, not much different than a paint project.
