The good:
pretty colors
engine compartement looks in good condition and 100% stock. So either original or very well done work.

The bad:
paint and body work, and leather look quite good, but not great.
trasmission cover leather looks like it has given up. Is the rest about to follow?

I think it will make a great DD for someone, not sure about the price though. That is top $ for this year model. A true time capsule car might go for a lot more (25K?), but in this price range I would be looking for better leather.

If you like the car and don't necessarly need to get out what you put in, then it is no big deal. Let's say the value of car is really more like $3500 or 4K. The difference is less than the cost of a timing belt/water pump job.

The car is worth 5K, especially it if it runs as good as it looks, I would buy it if I were you.

finally, someone NOT dissing the '84 auto.

I LOVE my 84 shark.

it has been exactly what I wanted. great DD with an AC that can freeze me out even in the 90+ temps we are having.

good luck on getting a shark.

Kind of an odd twist.. The car was taken off craigslist and I assumed it was sold. When I asked if it was sold he said he still had it. I told him it was no longer on CL thinking it had been flagged. The car is in AZ, but the photos were taken in WA where he moved from. I thought somebody figured the car was a scam ad. In AZ it is very easy to spot the scam ads on CL because our vegitation is so exotic. Fake ads seldom have native plants in them and stand out like a sore thumb. His reply seemed off to me. He said:

"yes I deleted the ad because I was getting so many reponses I figured maybe I should repost in the fall for more money. But I will honor the originally advertiesd price if you are still interested. Also, my daily driver doesn't have AC so I've really been enjoying the 928!"

I could be reading into it seems like the car would have sold if there was such a high degree of interest...Dunno

Personally, I immediately walk from a deal if the seller starts playing games.

Never ever believe ANYTHING that most craigslisters tell you....Many are dealers with out licenses flipping cars by jumping the title never registering in their name so any problems of any kind and you are looking for the guy who signed off on the title and NOT the person who ran the add and took YOUR MONEY. First thing you need to ask is how long have you owned it ? Is the title in your name ? Is it a clean title (not salvage) ? Is it current on registration (no back fees) ?
Then no matter how nice they say it is you MUST look it over carefully and check out how it runs and drives. Getting a PPI done is good in many ways since the tech doing it is not emotionally involved and if the seller allows a PPI it means he probably thinks the car is O K (not that he really knows).
And if someone starts talking B S .......and things do not sound right, trust your instinct and walk away.

The way I look at this situation is this: An expensive PPI or exhaustive inspection of my own or a long *** drive to see the car etc. seem to have been nullified by what feels like a shysty move on the part of the seller. I can't possibly imagine, loads of interest in an 84 auto for 5k that has been hit. There is no doubt the car looks really nice in pics, but I have never seen a feeding frenzy (get it) over a 928 of this vintage at this price. Plus the fact that he still has possession of it absurdly contradicts his story about the overwhelming interest.

This car:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...78-928-5k.html

Was listed for the same money. It did have some items needing sorting but it was a finer 928 IMHO. I spoke with the guy a week after I saw it and he told me a bout a relative who was interested in buying it. I may have been the only only one in a week who saw the thing. I later saw the same car for sale at a Mercedes dealer's craigslist post (presumably traded in) for 10k or more!

Its too bad, because I actually am going to PHX this weekend and was seriously going to look at the car, but this bizzare twist unfortunately made me call into question the claims the seller made about it.

Perhaps I am wrong. Maybe thousands of people in the U.S. are reading these posts and rennlisters have inadvertently stoked people's interest and increased the value of the 928.

take a look at this car do some negotiations and it could be yours its owned by a RLer and prolly can be gotten for under the 5K price due to the salvage title.
if your not looking for resale then this might be a better choice.

Well ... maybe from St. Louis to Reno, Chicago to Phoenix, Seattle to Dallas, etc.

Or, for the real traditionalists among us, maybe Denver to San Francisco - can you hear me, Kowalski, you still out there?

here is another car
the pictures look good the interior looks very nice for its age.
No mention of when the last t belt and Wp were done but it has a new rack the miles are not super critical , as its been driven thats better than a garage queen.
Outside looks good in the pictures and the wheels are stunning.
Priced a bit hi IMHO but that should open the door for reasonable offers this is the best looking car from the ones posted for 84s that you looking at,
and as usual the price reflects the condition so take your pick Bowerbird
Usually the more you pay the less you will have to do

I like the color combo of the black/brown more but condition wise, they don't seem too far apart to me...

Bowerbird it might make things easier if you can answer these questions,

how much cash do you have to spend on your new car?

How much do you have set aside for repairs?

Who will be doing the servicing of your new car?

What year are you looking for?

Do you prefer a stick or an auto?
