Default Seeking opinions on 1984 928s for sale

I had given up on finding a nice 928 for a decent price for a bit but this one caught my eye. Here is what I know about the car (which I have not yet seen in person).

$5,000 obo
Repainted
hood and right front fender NOT original
Ac works (converted to r134)
106 ish original miles
tires somewhat new.
timing belt replaced within last 2 years

Beyond that, the pictures should tell their own story. I think the pics look nice. I'm possibly going to see it this weekend but thought I'd seek expert opinions on the matter first. Besides, Its always nice to photos of these cars

New hood and fender, sounds like an accident paid for the new paint, not sure which is worse, accident or low cost respray, but it does look nice in pictures. Seems to me it should have a lot more good and a lot less bad for the money, without getting into too much picking it apart. Nicer IMHO 85/86 AT show up from time to time for the same.

It certainly looks presentable.

The questions I'd have concern the condition of the mechanical systems.
How much DIY work and money, on top of the $5k purchase price, must be invested for safe driving?
That's something you have to judge after driving it and inspecting it on a lift.

A little more esoterically, what is the history, has it been thrashed and if so by whom and for how long (I see the lowered 944/51 in the background pic)?

If it checks out, then you've found, in my opinion, a good entry point. My 84 automatic cost about $5K after refresh, and also is a front-damaged repaint. Great car.

No rub strips, and the front spoiler has been refurbished. I think it's been hit in the RR, or they tried and succeeded in flaring the fenders, but it's hard to tell without being there. Int seat and dash are typical, not too much to resolve.

The 84 auto is one of the slowest 928s out there. $5k is about the top of the market for something that is in good paint and driving condition. This shows well, but needs a few details on the int like the seat, dash and carpet refresh.

Check ALL electrical circuits before handing over the check.

i spent over $5000.00 to bring mine back to become a reliable DD so if everything works and no leaks then $5 grand is reasonable.

had not heard this comment before but not surprised. but did not get my '84 to be the fastest 928. but to become my DD as my 911 had morphed into a harsh DE car for the street. just spent last weekend thrashing the 911 at a DE. Monday, get in the 928 and turn on the AC for a very comfortable drive to work.

one reason I wanted an 84 is the 4 sp auto, and last of the 16V so less complicated to work on. so far have been able to do all my own wrenching as I refresh the car.

replacing the stock muffler/resonator with free flow units has significantly improved the sound track. if I ever have the extra cash, $5k SC will resolve a lot of the 'slowest' issue.

Also, What makes the pre 85 "s" models undesirable? My take on this has been it lacks the OB classic factor with lack of electrical complexity and does not have the 32v motors of its successors. Correct? Or is there more to it? I prefer the OB models myself, with phone dial wheels etc, they just look groovier, more 70s sci-fi to me. Do all 84s come with rub strips?

It is much like the difference between bulls and steers......1980-1984 USA cars had one major goal....meet emissions ! remember they had 85 MPH max speedos in 1980. So they look great but you have to learn never to street race. Work on that look in your eyes that says "You are not worthy" and I can not be bothered racing your new six cylinder mustang (so what if it has 305 HP) .....

Rub strips on the sides have always been an option. Most of the later cars have them. Some like them some HATE them.

This car must have an OLD repaint because the nose and the passengers side front fender lip (the trailing edge of that lip) look to be missing a fair bit of paint. Looks plenty presentable though. Again, if the car actually does not need anything mechanically then $5k would be a decent buy I think.

Oh, the power antenna should be DOWN, not up, unless the car was running and the radio was on when the pic was taken...but I doubt it. The antenna on my '84 is inop too...could be the aftermarket radio does not have the plug to make it go up and down, but I doubt it...probably broken.

The US "S" models before 85 were hamstrung by the emissions regulations.

The S models everywhere else in the world (also with 4.7L) put out 300hp (80-83) and 310hp (84-86) in their 16V models. Compared with the rather anaemic 234hp on the US 4.7 S.

The Euro S has better intake manifold, better heads, better cams, and a dual exhaust - so upgrading a US model to Euro power isn't trivial.

Are you sure that it's an '84? Those door speaker panels are pre-1984. Otherwise it looks good. Get a PPI before you hand over the cash. I love my '84! Drives great and less complicated than my '88 and '89. Good Luck!

I've got an '87 S4 with those door panels - unusual, but I've seen another with the same.

(interestingly the full 8-speaker harness is in the car - there's a weird factory plug-in adapter with the correct DIN plugs under the passenger-side cover where the factory amplifier would be that re-connects everything for the 4-speaker setup).

I seem to recall a Euro S that "somebody" got for a fair amount less than $5k.

I am not saying that this one isn't in some absolute sense worth $5k, because we all know all of our cars are worth tons more than they would sell for, but with some patience $5k should buy a LOT nicer 928.
