Default Clock upgrade idea

Hey guys I had a idea in my 928 tonight. What about wrist watch looking watch face for our 928 clocks? I know that is limited to OB's and maybe GTS's, but I like how Bentley's have Breitlings and I saw a picture of a Bugatti prototype with some other (Ultra) high end clock that also pops out and is a wrist watch.

Just thinking, why not a watch face and hands from the watch company that made those 928 watches? The face and hands should be much cheaper than a whole watch. There's a sandwich dial from Panerai that is really cool. Add the glow in the dark hands and numbers, etc. What do you all think? I have a broken extra circular clock I can donate to the cause for measuring, etc.

Here's some examples. Making a face and hands should be a lot easier than a watch. I'd like the watch brand on the face for this one.

So.....What do you all think?

PS I started this post in the 928 watch string but probably not a good place for anyone to see it. So here it is in it's own thread with a link above to the pictures I used.

I know about those clocks but frankly they are ordinary looking. I'm thinking something more wrist watch looking. Especially the Panerai sandwich dial and hands look.

Does it matter what time it is? If you are driving in the 928 it should always say 9:28. What time is it? A good time.
You could use your wrist watch.

Dave C changed my digi readout to 12 hour format, works for me.

Not really. But it would look cool. Super cars have nice clocks. 928 is a super car. Needs a nice clock IMHO. Digital clock models really don't benefit from my idea unless you changes up to a analog set up. However if I had an s4 again, I'd get a gts clock.

The biggest cost for a watch is labor, then materials unless you are talking true 18K Gold or Platinum. It won't cost much less (if at any savings) for just the "hands."

Either way, I like this!

I think its a good idea, except for one thing that may be just me. I just got my clock working, it turned out that one of the spade connectors was just unplugged.

Before I figured this out, I researched replacement OEM parts. $200!

So I would be nervous about taking my clock apart to put the new watch face and hands in. For a $200 part, it feels really cheap, and easy to break.

I meant that creating a new (high end looking) face and hands that fits in place of the stock face/hands -- but not actually replacing the clock or the Porsche part should be much less expensive than the 928 watch project was (Despite it being a very good value for what it was - limited to 100 pieces world wide, etc) because you don't need a box, a movement or even a case --just a face.

I'm estimating an off the shelf face size will fit my OB clock -- so it's just a matter of design, color, glow stuff and ideally translucence in the numbers so it can be back lit from the bulb.

Is it a fringe project, sure but I think it would be cool and "affordable" nonetheless. Especially if your a watch freak like me. I have several watches in my collection, so I've got the watch bug bad - hence my idea. Here's what I'm wearing today. (I'd love to have this face in my OB clock but the shape is wrong)

Just pointing out that there are some fantastic and cool looks for wrist watches out there -- that most people wouldn't even know about. The movements is what can make some of these watches cost more than a house but the face is not that expensive comparably speaking and yet that is where the beauty lies first.

Links to the other options for replacing the digi clock? EURO85 is in desperate need and believe it or not the damn POS Pioneer radio I put in DOES NOT HAVE A CLOCK! UNREAL! Looking for a direct replacement with no modding of the console needed. Don't mind a little wiring connection work though. Oh, analog would be preferred!

James, I thought you would be all over my idea as you were instrumental in that 928 watch project. I was hoping you would call in your contacts for the watch to do a clock. You have some round clocks and some square clocks on your collection of 928's. Wouldn't it be cool if your clock matched your watch???!!!! Sorry no ideas for the LCD other than to switch it to a GTS clock with a watch face!!! lol

Nah...the biggest costs of most "expensive" watches, outside the cost of gold and platinum cases, are marketing costs as well as wholesaler and retailer mark ups.

While there are hand built extemely complicated or sophisticated exceptions costing from say $25k to over the million $ mark, the vast majority of well known brand name "premimum" watches in the $600 to $15k range use Swiss made watch movements that cost about $35-$100 each. You pay a lot for the name on this dial. Even more for the case, check out the publication "Watches International" for a truely eyeopening series of watches, every month....

And yes, I own a few and have collected restored repaired timepieces for a very long time....

If I had the skills of Jim M, I would shape something on top of the existing clock/not ash tray to hold a single gauge (rear AC) or three gauge pod (no rear ac) to accommodate a single clock or outside temp gauge (VDO) or add some assortment of needed/wanted gauges. VDO makes lots of nice gauges to match with the factory installed ones. For now, I am hoping Jerry Feather manufactures blanks for the shift surround (5 Speed) https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...velopment.html. Then, everyone can have whatever gauges they want down there.

I read/view most of the watch mags often and have spend countless hours diddling around on Watchtime, TimeZone and the Purists websites too. I've purposely cooled my obsession with watch "research" recently -- as my 928 has become my money sponge of late and because my collection is well rounded now. Alas there's always something unique to lust for in the Horological world.( Luckily there's an active traders market so one can change taste if so desired.)

I agree with you on all points BTW. There's really no reason why my FM costs as it did -- other than the marketing and the design and maybe a few extra bucks for the Platinum rotor on an "off the shelf" Piquet movement BUT it still is a treasure (to me) on my wrist -- as my 928 is a treasure to my **** while running the twisties. LOL

The watch things is a nice idea, but in reality either the dash "clock" is going to be WAY TO SMALL, or the watch is going to be WAY TO BIG... Not to mention these were expensive enough as it was and we still have a few left. To do this for the car would be unpractical to say the least. The one(s) you are referring to exceed $100,000!!! More than most any of our cars cost... Actually, there may have been one that was in the $35k to $50k range...still more than most all of us paid for our cars!
