The build a 928 boat thread.
No more screwing around, the 928 boat project is back on the front burner!
The original boat I bought on eBay turned out to be a bad choice. It was heavy, abused and unable to be registered without a lot of paperwork hassles.
As luck would have it, a local performance boat guy was moving up to an offshore boat and took the engine out of his tunnel hull race boat. This was a running boat last season and with his BBC monster motor, ran about 120mph. I have a more modest goal of 70mph that I'm hoping to achieve with my little 300hp 928 euro engine.
Here are a few shots of the boat "as is" , I just got it home a couple of days ago. I'm taking inventory and getting a build plan together. This project should move along fairly quickly. So far it looks like wet sand and buff (possibly clear coat) , interior replacement and then rigging my engine. Trailer will be refurbished and get a set of 10x18 turbo twists to carry the Porsche theme.
The color scheme is not as subdued as I was hoping for but this is the original gelcoat, not a paint job. I'll probably work around that and tone it down with a more refined interior scheme.
So.................here she is!

Very nice! The PO achieved 120mph with a jet? I had no idea you could get that kind of speed from that kind of propulsion.
What is the goal of this project? Are you building a drag boat? A general purpose go fast lake boat? A race boat?
I like boats, I like the boat you bought, would not be a good choice for anyplace with more than wind chop waves though. I'm looking forward to the evolution of this project. Really a very cool concept.

Hi: Nice boat, is that an eliminator, 21 footer or 19ft? I have a 21ft eliminator with Mercury 260, at 75mph I had about 1,000 rpm's left so might do 85mph. Even 75 is fast, I can't imagine 120mph! The sensation of speed in a boat can't be duplicated by any car going at any high speed!

To answer a few questions....
This is a 19' Nordic tunnel hull. It is one of a few that was factory built with a very light layup to keep the weight down. The light construction is evident when you put any weight on the topsides.
The previous owner was running 850 hp. His max rpm was 6,500.
Jets can be very fast and this particular pump has had a lot of work done to it.
I think I'll get my 70MPH but I'm sure i won't have anywhere near the holeshot that the PO was getting.
I also looked at v-drive boats but the hi-po models only have neutral and forward, no reverse. Worse yet, you have to shut the engine off to shift from neutral into gear and then start in gear. I didn't want to cope with that around docks and loading ramps. I think the v-drive is the most efficient drive system and the jet may be the worst.
Big fun factor with the jet though :>)

Very cool project ! It will be a nice fit for a 928 motor . looks like a nice jet drive . keep it light and 70-80 should be no problem , with a nice jet tail !
