Default Dash lights rheostat/dimmer ?

Is it possible to bridge together the two wires at the rheostat, in order to have the dash lights illuminated always via an inline fuse maybe. I,ve just done an odometer repair and don,t want to go down the road of removing that binnacle again.

The rheostat wheel is hit and miss, more miss at the moment, so was after a quick repair untill I replace the switch next time the pod is out ?

I don't think the pod need to come out to get to the rheostat. Flip the wheel height adjuster down and 2 screws hold it in.

Wai ai man!

I havent heard 'binnacle' in a very long time.

(Former Newcastle import for 3yrs in the mid 90s, learnt a little Geordie back then, but resulted in more of what the ex fiance's grandparents considered a poor scouser accent, it was ****)

When I visit friends once a year in Portsmouth, they pick on me over it still.

.., well, just had a bit of luck, friend of mine has a NOS, dimmer switch still in it,s original wrapping, Just to confirm, that I can remove the dimmer without removing the pod, had a look with a mirror and while it looks awkward I guess it might be do-able ?.

Hope my sixty year old back holds out !

If all fails I will do what Lizard suggests.., thanks for the laugh Jeff

..., got my new dimmer switch and was wondering can anyone tell me please are the two wires to the dimmer common to each other.., bearing in mind I,m working upside down and not being able to see the wires too well, can they go on either contact on the dimmer ?
Any info greatly appreciated thank,s

Either wire on either contact is fine.

to replace the dimmer you need a short phillips screwdriver,
if necessary cut one of those with a thin plastic handle down to about 3 inches total length.

Then move the seat back all the way.

Its easier of you remove the lower parcel tray so you have room to slide under the dash.
Remove the pod trim cover then lay on your back and unscrew the hold down screw about 3 to 4 turns.

Dont remove the screw.

Lift the dimmer out and free its rear seating pin,

Then unplug the wires, plug new dimmer in.

Test dimmer function.

Then slide it onto the screw then tighten it down, install the parcel tray and the trim cover.

A repeat:
Get an 8' 1x12 board. Cut a piece off that is the same length as the height from the floor to the top of the door sill. Attach to the remainder at a right angle (making an L) and brace it with something. Add padding top and/or bottom if desired. Stick the board inside the car and lay on it - much easier on older backs...

the phillips should be 3 inches long or slightly less ,
a thin handle is also part of that .

the little screwdrivers that you see in shirt pockets are the best for this modification,
you will see when you get under the dash you wont have much room for the tool
