Even if they were in place and good then. They may not be now.
The 86 cars like mike frye do not suffer from this. Nor do cars with my cams.

I haven't seen an actually hydraulically dead lifter in a 928. Even with 230k miles mine were still perfect. I had one cap that popped out and the lifter noise would come and go ever so slightly. I put in the new cams and reused the lifters for testing purposes. Since then not one lick of lifter noise.

Might want to pop off the covers and inspect. Or just pop off the rear plugs and stick your finger in there. You can feel if it is there or not. And if one is missing you know which cam cover to pull off.

Here is also something to check, I know some recommend it but I would not put Trany fluid in a gasoline eng, I would use a good eng cleaner like the Rosoline(spl) product someone else mentioned.

There is an oil check valve in each head on MYs '87 and up, the manual (page 17 -10) recommends cleaning them if the lifters make noise (on start up).

I'm wondering if my TBF 89 has stuck lifters. The engine I put in had been sitting for a year or two and I'm hearing a noise from the passenger side head, sortof a rattle. I know the air pump makes noise because I spun it with a drill when the engine was out, but this noise is further back from the air pump. I picked up a quart of MMO today and will try that out.

My car is always "clicky" upon cold start. Once it's warm it goes away and stays away. I figure injector noise mainly until it's completely warm.

Whenever I have had a noisy lifter on the MB any of this products has always solved the problem.

Cheap and easy if this doesn't do it you got to pull it apart.

Good luck
Couldn't find any Marvel oil.....the wizard was out but did get some Rislone.

Its in but hasn't made much difference if any but will take it for a longer run tomorrow (if the weather co=operates) so the oil temp is at full operating level.

Colin, I'm hopeful this works as I dont want to waste anymore of the driving season with downtime.

Default It may take a good 30...

Minutes or more of normal driving at working temperature if it's a stuck lifter it will work other than you'll have to pull things apart when you get time.

Hope it works for you.

My new M1 oil is just above the full mark on the dip stick, so will have to drain a quart or so to add the MMO, not fun...

Malcolm.

When you come down for tires we could sort those pins in a day. Or install cams. :P

Are 16V lifters different from 32V units? Cant recall hearing about noisy lifters in a 16V so far. I run mine on 5W40 Delvac, never hear a thing, even after weeks of standing.

Lifters click. Cam chains rattle. I worked on one car that had a badly stuck cam chain tensioner. Could not unstick it. Had to replace it.

Injectors click very lightly all the time, not just cold.
