Sorry Ole .....we could always go down the horsepower/torque dialogue long after the lifter discussion pls.

The oil and filter are fresh and I've read the tranny fluid solution but at way south of $120 for an oil change I'll live with a noisy lifter or 2 until driving season is coming to a close......expected snow this weekend

I do not here lifters or clicking injectors when the hood is closed or from inside the car with mine if that helps.
Others with much more knowledge than me should chime in.
Snow...rats.

They shouldn't be noisy unless the car's been sitting unused for a while, or oil pressure is too low, which shouldn't be an issue with 15W50 assuming the engine's ok (I find a week is enough for a couple of them to be noisy - and it takes about 3 miles of driving at sub-3k rpms for them to fully pump up from cold start).

If your car hasn't been sitting malcolm, then I'd suspect oil pressure to the heads - have you replaced the 5 rubber plugs at the rear end of the camshafts with the correct metal pins? If not, I'd be concerned that one or more of them has dropped into the heads and exposed an oil journal in the heads, causing loss of pressure there. (the original plugs deform due to heat, oil and time, and can fall out of position)

Are you sure the noise is lifters and not injectors?

Default Malcolm,

May be taking one a while to really pump up.
Might want to cycle a quart sorry , litre of ATF through for a few k, and then refresh the oil to flush the system.
I'm running 20/50 and all I've got is injector noise. (Ford 4 hole, and I've yet to re-install the covers, so, no surprise there really).
(When the damn thing's running).
Sorry, been an "interesting" spring this year.
On the other topic, snow? really?
It's been exceptionally crappy weather here...almost as bad as Vancouver for rain and cool, but really, snow?

Default This should do it...

Add a quart of Marvel oil or Rislone high performance oil treatment.

Whenever I have had a noisy lifter on the MB any of this products has always solved the problem.

Cheap and easy if this doesn't do it you got to pull it apart.

Good luck

When was the last time you had the valve covers off?
I think you probably have one of the rubber pucks that block an oil passer fall out.

I'll review my valve cover project pics.

This one gets my vote. When I first got it, my car had been sitting for a LONG time and clearly had gunked up lifters. It would take a really long time to pump them up every time I drove it.

Then Nicole from Hooked On Cars responded to a thread like this recommending the Rislone and I tried it. Now no matter how long I let it sit (though it never sits more than a week or two at the most) I never hear lifter noise.

OH, and I use Amsoil synthetic 20-50!

....and here comes MK in 3,2,.....1

I'm willing to try an additive as long as I dont have to change the oil again.....$120 oil change should last a little longer than 1k km......realise oil is much cheaper then engine blocks/pieces blah blah blah.

How much Rislone did you add Mike? wonder where to source around here?....hmmmm
