I went to Wally world tonite and I happened on Mobil One 10-40W. I was all happy and excited to see Oil I can use, and it was going to be used on the 928.
Well I get home and its the HIGH MILAGE MOBIL!!!! I was all pissed. I dont know what kind of oil this is! Its for cars with 75,000 miles or more. Well mine has 69,200 but I dont know how good this stuff is.
I used to use 15-50W as we all did here in the desert. Wally world is selling 10-30
5-30 etc etc all oils for much colder climates than here!
Anyone know about this oil?
Also the 15-50 I USED to use has been changed by Mobil. I dont even know if the oil (if I could find it) is of the same quality that I used to use.
You can still buy Mobil 1 in 15W-50, but most people won't pay that much for motor oil, so most retailers don't stock it. Another problem is Mobil 1 has too many different viscosity options, so stores can't stock them all.
+1 on the Mobil-1 15W-50. You might have to look for it beyond Wally World in some places now (e.g. NAPA, etc.). I would stick with a xW-50 weight of some kind IMHO... Synthetic or Dino oil - Mobil-1, Brad Penn, Torco, Redline, Amsoil (just ask Mark K.).
If you search you'll find MANY, MANY oil religion threads on this list... and learn more about oil than you ever wanted to know...
I run Royal Purple 10-40 in my shark, and 20-50 Valvoline Racing Synthetic in the Pantera. Both are expensive, but I only change oil once a year in either car, so cost doesn't matter.
Yea I know there are 8 bazillion threads. I just get so friggin mad every time I need it. The situation changes every other week. Most of me friends stocked up when they heard the rumors.
I just wanted to see if anything new has changed in the last few months.
What you are looking for is phosphorus and zinc (i.e. ZDDP) in the 1200-1400 range or thereabouts. Mobil-1's 15w50 is 1200/1300, your 10w-40 is 900/1000, just a tick above regular SM/GF-4 oil at 800/900.
You want to avoid oils marked GF-4, they are always low-ZDDP. SM-marked oils can be higher, if they are 40 or 50 weight (e.g. 15W-50 is marked SM with 1300 ppm zinc, but the 30-weight SM's are 900 max).
if porsche had as many test race miles with a 928 as I did, they would use the oil I run and endorse it for the 928
Except the German drivers toss cars around like they are driving a go kart, which will "skew" your results.
When you "sweep" up the pieces, after "my dyno test", go home and build a new engine, and stick it in the car, you can bring it back down to Willow Springs (got to break it in somewhere) and we'll arrange to have Anderson drive her for 15 or 20 laps...not that it will take that many. No Accusump, no drysump, nothing but what you've always run.
Then we will have some useful data about your favorite oil....until then, we just consider you and your experience with oil a "unique experience."
