Default Use S4/aftermarket fuel rails on 16v?

I would like to avoid using the stock fuel rails that use the rubber hoses to plumb fuel to the injectors when I convert my CIS system over to Megasquirt on the OB track car. Is the injector spacing the same so that I could use S4 fuel rails, or some aftermarket version that uses the more modern retaining clips?

Not a direct answer for you, but I was planning to machine generic extruded rails to fit my setup when I do the MS3X conversion. I think this will only work with Euro S runners though, as the US runners curve outwards more, getting into the straight fuel rail path. If somebody has made this work, please let me know.

Yes, the spacing is the same between the 16V and the 85-86 fuel rails but you will need to fab up a hold down. You can leave the 16v injector hold down in place and use those but then you just have the little inj. clips and fuel lines holding the rail in place. Personally I think you need something more substantial but some run them that way.

I don't know if the S4 is the same spacing or not. I have no experience with those.

Feel like trying out two sets of 944 fuel rails and injectors? It has been something I was thinking about for my 1980 928 project which is now on hold. I will send them to you for the cost of shipping. If it works, they are yours to keep. Just share the tech. If it doesn't work, just send them back. The ratings are very close between early 944 injectors and MY 1980. I would assume some sort of hold down brackets would need to be fabbed, at least on one side and flex fuel lines will need to be implemented for sure. The spacing will be the same. Thoughts?

I used S4 rails, but there was quite a bit of bracketry to make them work. I am sure you can deal with it better than I did.

But take a close look at this:
