Jeff I rode that race. The year I was in the best shape, they cancelled it. Something to do with the CHP coverage. I prerode it maybe 6 times.
I worked at China Lake for 25 years. DOD for 30
I was gonna ride it that year too. Already had plane ticket so we brought our mountain bikes. We rode with Joe Dunn and Dan Buckely (passed away about three or four years ago). Then there was a character Jim McNealy in a wheel chair that we had trouble getting to stop talking to us.
Perhaps you know these guys.
My friends name that lived out there is Jeff Dalton. Know him? He was in the Sidewinder area. Moved back to Iowa in 1997.
Let me tell you guys Dwayne knows what he is doing. He took a flashlight, put on his scholarly glasses and started his clinic. I learned more in that time, than I have in 25 years of reading Porsche magazines.
No surprise there. You met the Art of 928 Maintenance Zen Master.
I think Dwayne doesn't know how much help he is giving around. Today I will be printing his 'remove the tank tutorial'. I have many of them already cover with grease.
Greetings to him from another neighbor (ok, this time maybe not around the corner)...
Read some of Dwayne's write ups... It is just a car... not that big a deal. The difference between the 928 and other cars is that everything is bolted together so well you often have to remove 2X the number of bolts as in a "regular" car and they are packed so tightly that sometimes you have to remove 5 things to get to the ONE THING you actually want to get to, but it is NOT rocket science...it is a car!
When you consider how much "extra" time it takes to stop, remove the gloves, pick up the camera, get the shots, then edit and editorialize..........there is a lot being freely donated to the community. Thanks Dwayne

He is a damm smart guy, so I wouldn't put it past him to have some help with shooting pictures and editing. I cannot imagine a one man team putting it all together.
