Default FS 91 S4 for $12,500 Looks like a good deal

Looks like a nice looking car that is priced right. I have been exchanging emails with the owner and he needs to sell this car as he has no space to store it anymore. I would pick it up but it is a bit out of my price range. No affiliation with the owner...just passing along the info.

It's a salvage title.

I'd be suspect of the car without more history and that price becomes questionable without a PPI of the highest order.

It looks decent, but the pictures aren't very good. If it has a salvage title, it will have to be really nice to get anything close to the asking price with that mileage.

Hey looks nice, I bought a red 88 S4 with 130k miles on it, the paint is in great condition, the interior is in amazing condition after 130k miles and it runs good, no over-heating etc...

Now the guy I bought mine from had all the original work history going back to 1988, never tinted the windows, stock wheels etc...everything.

He was asking 10,900 and I got it for $7500...probably could have got it for 7k but... I am happy.

I would think the price he is asking is a little high given the mileage and the mods, remember not all mods mean the seller can get more money for the car.

The others on this forum have much more experience than me so Good luck...!

You talked the seller down from $10,900 to $7500? That's impressive.

Marinesniper, we have to see this car. Without pics no one around here will believe anything. Just a coincidence but my PO started asking $12,500 and I purchased for $7500 as well. As far as actual value, I have said it before and I will say it again. One of the big obstacles to 928 value is this forum. The negativity on 928 price value around here is astonishing.

NOTE the comments about asking price and selling prices. Supports what I have often said about negotiating.. there is often 25% or so of wiggle room.

And you've chronicled at least $10K worth of time/money additional in your blog posts since buying.

Most of them are junk except to hobbyists.

I have to disagree with you Chris. There are a lot of good cars out there that people are passing on because everyone tells them they will have twice the price just in bringing the car up to date in maintanance. It really depends how someone goes about it. With my liscense, taxes, parts, insurance, etc. I am still under $10K total investment. My time, I do not consider that money when working on a toy. I have covered most everything that should have been covered like the MM, TB, oil pan, intake, etc. etc. Parts that really need to be changed are not that expensive unless you are trying to make a brand new car again. Everytime I drive the car I can not understand how I can get that kind of a car that performs and drives that great for less than 10K. I do not watch the Farrari or Lambo market that well, but I wonder what 1987 models of those cars still go for, I do not think they are built any better or go any faster and I am sure they have the same maintanance issues.

Any good ones also need or will need significant maintenance.

The market knows this and has responded. Expensive nightmare unless you are a "car guy".
Not talking about us. Talking about the surburban-based car market overall. Its beyond risky for an average buyer, its factual.

You're under 10 through discount parts, extensive network of troubleshooting and free labor. Average guy/girl in the market for a car doesn't know how to put that equation together. It would only be by shear luck that they would find an honest enthusiast-style 928 mechanic near them --- and still the labor would blow their minds. Retail, you are way over 10.

Enjoy them. I sure do. But lets not kid ourselves when we talk about the value or "talking down the value". There is no value unless one is deeply immersed. The question becomes "what is the size of the enthusiast market" and what is the value within. And thats a rollercoaster.

I'd pay 12-15 for a well-sorted car. But that's me. I can, with support, tolerate the troubleshooting and fixing process. Well-sorted is a transient thing.

Here is another one on Ebay that looks like a great deal at first look. Does anyone know anything about this car? A LSD S4 5-speed with low miles for less than $14,000. I think there are some great deals out there right now.

I would not say I used discount parts, I used one of our best vendors who works hard to get us good prices. I did make assessments on things and did not change them unless they needed to be changed. One example was the WP. I drive very little and the pump only has about 20K on it since it was put in at a Porsche shop. From the paperwork I have I made the judgement that it was a OEM pump and I feel comfortable with it for a while. Could I have changed it? Yes, but I could have also changed 100 other things and been closer to that 20K. Acually for as little as I drive the car I could have probably just drove it as is for the next 5 years. If something happened I could have easily parted it out for most of my investment and chalked it up to some bad luck. I think it is a great car that needs to be preserved so that is why I have done most of the important maintanance, but I was never out to make it brand new again so it could be driven a realiable 30K a year. I will drive about 2K a year. I think that is the difference. It just depends on how much you want to invest in a car compared to how much you will use it.

I believe I saw this car at Cars and Coffee in DFW last June. Looked nice. I liked the LED running lights around the fogs. Not so much around the headlights. Other than that, don't know anything about it. Drove away under its own power.
