so yesterday was to be my first drive in the 79, while going over some things in the rear i smelled gas, looked at my fuel pump i rebuilt 2 months ago that had work great for the time i needed to get the car up and running, well i got her running, rebuilt calibers and changed master, now i had brakes and a car that ran good! but that JB on the fuel pump was finally braking down from the gas! no big deal, i knew it was going to need to be replaced soon, now that everythings working. I went out nd got new bosch installed it it pumped up once and quit working!!!!! i took it off and jumped it to a batt and it is locked up!! what bummer! has anyone else had this problem with a new pump? l
I guess its like ford says( check with a known working part not nessacerly a new one)

Did you spend time cleaning tank?
To clear pump, sometimes reversing leads, back/forth, with injection of WD 40 spray from straw, can dislodge stuff. (Yes, I've had a new one lock -up a couple times, but due to debris)

My '79 has both in-tank and external fuel pumps.
The in tank pump should have a strainer nozzle. If you haven't removed it, I suggest that you do and
a) confirm that it works
b) confirm that the strainer is attached to the intake.
The strainer will age and break thus allowing crud to get into the pump.
If you only have an external fuel pump, there is an in tank strainer that should be in place.

i have not cleaned the strainer, i did drain the tank and did not see much debris, and my old one put bck on the car starts right up, Just not safe with the gas seeping from the JB.
Landseer i did try revesing but not with WD, Maybe i'll give that a shot.
Thnks, Steve

I have bought two non functioning pumps in a row from my parts suplier in the last year had to return them both now it looks like I have a third one thats not pumping as much fuel as its suposed to I'm not to impressed with the quality right now either sry to hear you got burned i have had good luck freeing up old pumps by boiling them in a pot of water for an hour or so might try that before you spend more money. good luck

Landseer, I had bought two pumps brand new not rebuilt from altrum auto parts supliers they specialize in import car parts, both bosche both were locked up solid when conected to power never even put in the car ( I have learned to test them before I put them in now) now the third one I have seems to not be producing enough presure. They exchanged the pumps no charge but I though it odd to get two in a row that were no good and now a third one on the fritz. Have they changed producers or something that had changed thier quality ?
