Default VIDEO-Can anyone tell why this car is running so bad

82 Euro S 5spd recently refreshed and still trying to get the bugs out. No power under load and lots of backfiring. I have the fuel pressure gauges but have not used them yet. 3 people that have seen the car run have said it's an ignition problem and 1 says the timing it too advanced.

Use your fuel pressure gauges, check the timing with a light, go through your spark plug wires, checking both ends for corrosion. Triple check your cam timing. No real easy answer, just have to go through it.

Timing off?
But really sounds like it is running on 6 cyl, did you mix up two wires?

I'll check again. May pull one plug boot off and see if it's worse.

I had two plug wires backwards and it sounded just like that. Is it idling low?

I would sure do a compression test. Getting better as it warms may mean it is just creating some compression that is not there when cold. I know it sucks to think about but I always like to get the really bad things checked off first.

sounds like its only running on 7.i had similar problems with my euro 81 5 speed and my fault turned out to be bad or worn injectors no problem to fit and inexpensive to buy but i had fitted new plugs, filters and ht leads before i got to them no harm anyway all serviceable parts that are going to benefit how well it runs in the end,but i would say start with the basics and go through it.i would start with your electrics, half your gauges are not working i would remove all fuses and clean and replace as necessary also clean all your earths.you also have a blown exhaust maybe a header gasket thats the backfiring your hearing, check all ht leads are on right, the distributer cap is numbered follow leads to make sure the are going to the correct cylinder.no 1 cylinder is passenger front of car with no 8 on the drivers side bulkhead.if all is ok pull the plugs check compression, check cap, rotor, and plug leads if all that checks out fit new injectors i sourced some in the US at $18 each.my car is now running perfect thanks mainly to the advice i received on this list.please let me know if i can be of any help....have you replaced any of the above already?

I put new rings in the motor a few months ago. Plug wires look ok and they have passed all the suggested tests. I have refreshed this car from the ground up and all grounds,CE,connections, gauges and pod have been gone through. My gauge problems must lie somewhere else besides the connections cause they are solid. Cap is new w/ new rotor. Plug wires are connected correctly and static timing was verified mechanically. I need to go through Sharkskin's ignition trouble shooting guide. I have MB 047 injectors to install. I tried to advance the timing and I got bad preignition. If I back it off it really has no power so I think leaving the timing at factory spec is correct. Could be injectors since on a recent spark plug check I found one of the plugs looked new and unused.

I am in the camp that says cam timing is off... But there may well be other problems too, but cam timing it probably part of it. When the timing was off on my EURO GTS it would pop at you big time when you would come off the throttle and then it would have no power and then it would kick in a bit, but never felt "right". Cam timing off after a T-belt change was the culprit.

Have you already taken off each of the injector plugs one at the time to see if the idle changes?

Hi BC,

I have CIS. Do you mean spark plug boots?

I verified this by mechanical means a few months ago. Made sure piston was on compression stroke by monitoring pressure at spark plug hole then when piston was at the top of this stroke I verified balancer at TDC, rotor at #1 and cam gears at their marks. I think static timing is good.

You have multiple problems.

I would say Timing definately (power under load..)

Misfire maybe (bad spark plug wire ? .> Test them all. assume everything is wrong.)

Fuel issue -Use your gauges don't guess. I ha da wire (sparkplug) the beru end was glued ..

Confirm all the hard issues (cam timing, fuel pressure, firing order( Wiring) ) ..

Oh I read a few post where you say 'I think...[fill in the blank]' . I'm a believer in the "Im sure the timing is x - y - z" If you are not sure double check it or get someone who Knows how to show you what to check and how to set it up. But at least its moving under its own power, so you are close..

your gauges problem might be the clocks themselves?my voltmeter reads 1 volt lower the actual voltage all the time and recently the speedo stopped reading, clocks might be a weak area.GET THOSE NEW INJECTORS INTO IT ASAP im fairly sure that whats wrong, old worn out mechanical injectors probably not doing your refreshed motor any good running like that.be ready to reset the co adj as soon as the new injectors are in mine ran super rich once fitted 1/4 turn in the lean off direction and it transformed the running.i havent looked back since, id change the oil also after the poor running also no matter how recently it was done.

I guess I had a reading and comprehension FAIL. I did not see CIS before. Disregard. Its still missing - but maybe not because of fuel.
