Default '93 Instrument Cluster Face Disintegrating

The film that is used to make the printed black instrument cluster face is bubbled and flaking like a dry leaf. I have searched the threads here for a few nights, and the web in general and cannot find any mention of the face delaminating / disintegrating. I fear that the only solution is to replace the whole cluster. Which will probably be a) very hard to find and b) expensive. Anyone have any threads / links / advice?

PS I'm a noob to posting, been lurking for years.

His: '93 Zermatt Silver

Hi RedGrant: Welcome to rennlist!

Is it flaking everywhere, or just in the vincity of a warning light?

I've only seen one case where it started bubbling at a corner, and thought it must have been some sort of heat damage - either from sun exposure, or a constantly on warning light.

A picture would be helpful.

Interesting. I've seen a lot of the post-88 digital clusters. I've never seen one disintegrating.

The face of the cluster is only available (per Pet) along with the clear plastic shield, housing, and other bits. But, again according to Pet, is available sans the two boards that comprise the 'meat' of the cluster.

However, a used housing might work just as well. Mark Anderson at 928 International might be able to find a fried cluster with a good face. The face of the cluster is separable from the rest of the cluster, so you could swap a good face from a fried cluster into your otherwise good cluster.

Good luck.

I've seen it on one other car. Don't have a fix as the one I saw was just starting to seperate. My suggestion would be to send it, or at least e-mail to Palo Alto Speedometer or Hollywood Speedometer for an estimate or recommendations.

Wow! You all rule. I return from the garage and there are three replies! I'll post a pic tomorrow when I have the cluster back out of the pod (fixing dead LED bulbs).
Nicole - it is bubbling in waves from the lower left, like ripples on a calm pond, and from the upper right. Flaking is from upper right as well.
Dave C - I looked thru 928intl et al to no avail. But I will send an email request for a dead one, good idea. I'm also patrolling the pick-a-parts out in the San Fernando Valley
Jim M - I'll contact N. Hollywood Speedo (fairly close to me).

Cheers All!

PS - Feels like I'm talking to rock stars, I've been reading you all since '02. That's the year I finally succumbed to the regressive Porsche gene that runs (speeds) in my family, and simultaneously scored the car I'd secretly lusted after since a '76 Road & Track 'sneek peek' article.

Martin,
Exactly. I have been pondering making a new one out of Duratrans. I've seen others use Duratrans to make HVAC indexes for the console.

Seen two doing it, one just starting in one spot. The first one I saw was a total disaster, made me wonder if the car was a flood car.

Every warning light was like this picture.

I'd say you're going to have to just replace it if it looks like this one.

I have a few of the used digital clusters in stock and could remove the faces.

As already mentioned by Worf928 the face with backing plate and instruments is available from Porsche but ar circa $1800.

WOW, Grant a Zermatt GTS...they don't hardly get any prettier than that! The first NICE 928 I ever saw was black '88 S4, the second NICE 928 and FIRST GTS I ever saw was "LuxJet" (that was the LP on it) a '93 Zermatt out of OK. When I saw it, it was living in Dallas with its second owner. I understand he sold it and it went back to OK... I have ALWAYS lusted after that car!

Thankfully neither of my GTS's are having this problem. I wonder if it is a heat problem. While we get mighty hot in TX my cars live in and A/Ced garage and my '92 lived in Germany (NOT known for its heat!) The two having the problem on the thread are both VERY HOT SoCal cars and as noted Texas gets plenty hot to be effecting the car Sean is looking at.
