1 owner low mile GTS deal???
#61
We all had our chance. I was tempted, but having 4 already and no where to put a 5th, I deferred. The seller who was helping his 93 year old doctor friend did him a great disservice. If you look at his feedback, it is obvious he knows nothing about 928's. He probably thought 34K was all the money in the world and was shocked that it sold in 2 hours time. A little research on his part as to the value of the car would have netted him another 10K easily. His ad was amateurish, poorly conceived, lacked important information, and displayed lousy pictures. He also can't spell worth a damn. He comes off as not giving much concern or interest in helping his friend and like he's only interested in a quick buck for himself. No doubt, he will be taking a share of the profits for himself from the good doctor and thinking what a good job he did. Lucky for "low miler" or whomever, not so lucky for the owner.

More like $50K. Willhoit has been sitting on his current low mileage crop of GTS's for quite a while. I know he set a high water mark with the $105K sale, but he waits around for the rare buyer who is willing to pay absolute top dollar for a 928. Regardless, it was a good price for an as is and un-inspected MT GTS.
This car is worth anywhere between $55K-$70K. Willhoit could probably sell it for north of $70K, while Todd (low miler) would probably sell it for around $60K. Regardless, it sold for way under it's actual value and the new owner, or flipper, made one helluva great buy!

I wouldn't say that we all had our chance. The car was only on Ebay for a few hours. I check both Rennlist and Ebay daily, and the car was listed and sold before I was aware of it. Otherwise I would have purchased it.

...would be true for most any color.
....unless he sold the two 5-speed cars not so.
.....pretty close.
The eBay auction surely was....

Remember that this was an eBay sale, by a seller who is unknown to the 928 community, with a lots of questions not answered by the listing. It was also offered with a buy-it-now price that meant that it wasn't likely to last long. What was being offered was not a Willhoit car. It might have that potential, or not-- pretty hard to tell from the pictures. To borrow a few words from Clint, You've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?
If you think that was easy to click that button, well I hope you have the opportunity to find out some time. A couple of thoughts: It helps if the spousal unit is the one that says "So push the darned button already, you idiot!" And it also helps to live on the west coast, and waste a lot of time hanging around ebay and RL.
Did the seller do right for his friend? Sure, an expert on 928's probably would have presented the car a bit differently, or included more information. But his interests and expertise lie elsewhere, and he is trying to help out a friend. He might have gotten more, but the market is fickle and the car has some unknowns. He could have sold it to someone like Michael Willhoit, but I suspect that what Michael buys cars for, and he sells them for, aren't the same number.
What I do know for certain is that the seller is one of the most forthright and upstanding gentlemen that I have ever had the privilege of meeting. Working with him was a real pleasure.
Doug, you said someone should get it before the dealers, we did and we thank you!
Stephen (nc_growler) and his dad very kindly made the trip this morning to check the car over and take some pictures. Thank you Stephen! Hopefully we can get some pic's posted by this evening. (I know, I know...).
What we know is that the car did sit for many years; the registration was last updated in '05 so I suspect for about five years- that's a long time. It was serviced, once, at around 9000 miles, and just had its fluids changed. It seems to run well but the belts are almost certainly original. And there are some scuffs inside and out, we won't know how serious those are until it gets here.
Then we'll have to face the curse of the low-miles car! Follow Ferry's advice and drive it, or preserve it? Or a little of both? Before starting with the advice, let's wait and see what we've got.

As Chuck can attest to, not everything is as it may seem. I sure hope this one was as described and someone gets a hell of a deal.
I've personally PPI'd (Sterling/Jim M also) a low mile GTS (sub 10k miles) and whoa, not a good car at $20k. Owner was asking $65k.

Congratulations and good luck! It's great that the car is going to a Rennlister and not a dealer.

Good luck with the purchase - hope it works out as well as it can for a low miles car that's sat for 5 years.
As for the curse, its something I've been pondering lately. This car is low miles, but not extremely so. If it were me, I'd plan to put 1-2k miles on it a year, and by 2025 it'll still be a 30-40k mile car.

Congrats Jim and Sue!
Great buy. I didn't see any red flags in my cursory review. I bet it will be like new.
