911 guy tells me yesterday, cant make a racehorse out of a Pig
Guy is a long time customer of mine, good guy, been in PCA DE stuff for years and years, real car guy.
So any way, we were talking about my 5 speed conversion and he comes up with the line, and says it is a old Porsche line, (I had never heard it)
"You cant make a racehorse out of a pig, but you can damn sure make a VERY fast PIG"
I thought it was funny.

Are you sure it wasn't an insult of 928's? I've done PCA spirited drives for almost 15 years now, always in a 928, usually the only 928. I can't tell you how many times some 911 guy has told me how amazed he is to realize how well the 928 handles or how well it keeps up with everyone. And usually I'm at the front of the pack. My point is the 928 is a hell of a lot better than most 911 owners realize.

I'm not one to talk because I am still new, but I did here a come back that you could have used.
"You cant make a racehorse out of a pig"
They did, they added 2 more jugs to a bug
But he is your friend so it may not have been a good come back.

I hang out with a whole bunch of folks who own 911, 928 951 944 and so on. My wife and I arrange the Treks for us and we always use the 928. Comfort is key to these runs. Not one time has anyone ever said anything negative about the 928, or for that matter any Porsche. It is all about the fun and togetherness for us.

Nick was making fun of the folks that put down the 928, he is a car guy, owns several different Porsche's, not just 911's, but he still is a 911 guy, if that makes any sense.
He did go along for a ride in a customers car with a blower on it, he knows what the cars can do.
he told me when I first started on my 928, not to let any body tell me that the 928 was not a real Porsche.

I had no interest in buying a 911 after selling the 928. I could have easily picked up a 2 year old C2S for the same price as the Spyder. Yeah 911's look nice and have a unique driving experience but Porsche knows that other engine/transmission layouts result in better handling and more predictable road manners. If Porsche spent nearly as much time developing their mid engine and front engine rear tranny cars as they do the 911 their other cars would be unstoppable.

Sounds like a girl I dated back in college...
There is a young gentleman that lives in my neighborhood [with mommy and daddy] that is theoretically a "Porsche certified technician" at one of the local dealerships. He and a friend drove by and saw me washing the S4 one day and decided to stopped. The "technician" pompously explained that Porsche never made a factory V8 powerplant during the build-cycle of the 928. Wow. Just wow.

I agree with you, just look where they could have went with the 928, or the Cayman.
Every real car guy who is into Porsche's knows this, only the die hard 911 guys wont admit it.
If they even half way tried the Cayman could run off and hide from the top of the line 911.
I want one badly, they look great, handle great, yep, may be my next car.
