Late 911-family car owners have no room to say that their 3500lb back-motor car is more or less of a 'pig' than a 3500lb front-motor car.
Lots of marketing decisions are made that cripple the as-delivered performance of the "lesser" (read: lower sales price) models like the Boxster and Cayman. A Cayman will easily run from a 911 with the same engine, so the full-size 911 engines aren't installed in the cars. Factory race support is for the 911 family so that people will relate the race performance to a higher-priced example on the showroom floor. It just makes good business sense for the factory to do that. At the same time, it makes no sense for owners to be blind to the possibilites available in the non-911 models.

Jim Bailey told us a few stories about 911 owners who got spun out when trying to follow the very brown 928. And that one isn't even the latest, highest developed model year...
I usually say: The 911 may be the better Porsche, but the 928 is the better car.

True story, last winter my 79 was parked on the showroom of the local import repair shop for storage. A 993 owner was in getting his oil changed, walked up behind my car, looked into the hatch and asked why the motor was out.

In the automotive world, there is always the snobbiness even among the same manufacturer. Ferrari V12 guys denouncing the V8 ones as "just a Dino."
As a sport car in the 1970's, the 928 was quite big and heavy, hence the impression of a pig despite being miles ahead of the 911 in terms of design sophistication. When it bears the name of "Porsche" with siblings winning all kinds of international races, it became the easy target for snobs. I grew up seeing 911 winning races and up/down the streets. But I felt that the 928 was a better Porsche. Having owned 4 911 Carreras, I always wanted to have a 928 at the right time. A true car guy should be able to appreciate different strengths and weaknesses of different cars. It is not about your 928 is not as good as my 911 or whatever sport car BS.

I have given a few 911 and Cayman drivers rides around the track. They usually have comments like "I can't believe the torque your car has" in response to the car clawing its way out of corners with it's rear end just barely hanging on.
If ya got it, flaunt it!

A buddy of mine has a 2010 911 white carrera and we golf in the summer and we like to park side by side far away from the entrance. When we finish and while putting our clubs back in the car, comments often made from people "nice 911 and there's something you don't see everyday" pointed at my 84!

Porsche long time fans should know that quote. It's pretty famous generally attributed to Bob Akin about his 935 (which would be 911 derived, ironically). And it was somewhat a term of endearment.

I was totally into Cayman until I found out it has no back seat just like a Boxster. I'm not interested in two-seat sports cars, so if I had to choose I would get a newer 911 because the back seat is surprisingly about the same size as in a 928, maybe even a little more legroom.

I am hoping that a Cayman is my next car.
Ask any of those 911 snobs why the 956/962's driveline is configured like that of the Cayman. We won't even talk about the Carrera GT.

I like that. My favorite is "you can't polish a turd. But sometimes you can roll it in glitter". I have heard people call the 911 a 'terrible design, wonderfully executed'.

Just went out on a 90 mile drive yesterday with the local PCA group about 50 cars all makes, models, etc. I was in the lead pack of our speed run to our final destination though some of the best roads Central Cal has to offer. Love the 928!!!! The only car I couldn't see was the guy in a 914-6 sporting
575HP....I didn't get a chance to talk with him about his ride, however just from the sound of it was impressive.....

Another Porsche with a properly configured drive train.
