from bouncing around from forum page to page, X pipe is biggest bang for the buck. High flow cats along with it. That is what I will be doing within the next 6 months. I also have an 86.5.

Probably your exhaust system is the best area to start. People have upgraded to cat back systems like Roger's and Carl Faussett's, and/or have even done the X-pipe. Others have made their own to save a little cash for restoration needs.
Start with the basics and make sure the car is running right before going further. Have fun while you do these things too!

Look at Porkens stuff, www.liftbars.com , he tinkers with his 86's nonstop.
Defeating the cats will make the car stink, but offer little gains. Same for the K&N, makes power in magazines not cars.

I recommend you spend every effort to making the car cosmetically perfect inside and out.
then worry about 'mods'.
Far too many ratty 928s out there with owners focused on mods instead of making the car look good.
Don't be another one.

I agree that the car should be running at 100% before any mods are installed. If it's not running as it should, you won't reap the benefit of the modification. You're baseline for comparison must be a properly tunned engine. Once done, free up the exhaust and let it breath.

Go for the X - Pipe/ high flow cat combo and a set of Porken's chips. For the chips, you will need to install a 55 psi fuel pressure regulator from an 1987 model.
I have the same set up in my 86.5. It makes a noticeable difference.
