I always cut/replace that hose. I use standard hose which is compatible with gas, on my car I cheated and looped the hose under the frame rail. More than enough room, and way less fuss!!!

Can this upper filler neck hose be replaced without removing the entire gas tank and supporting vacum, pump, other hoses..., etc... ?

Any pics would be greatly appreciated...

Hello Al,
I have the exact same symptoms of leaking gas from the tank on my '84 as you do. I'm in the middle of replacing the tank right now and have posted the procedure in a post called "84 FUEL TANK REMOVAL PROCESS w/PICS". Although I think that vent hose could be replaced without removing the tank entirely (it would have to be dropped some and may involve some acrobatic insanity), I would recommend removing the tank. You will then be able to do a proper inspection on the hose connecting ports to determine if they are also leaking.

In addition, I found the hoses on mine to all be fine. The leak was actually caused by a crack in the top of the fuel tank (see the pics in my post) which produced the same symptoms you have. It would be worthwhile to take a look at the outside of the tank while still installed in the car to look for traces of fuel staining. If the vent hose or connector is leaking, you should see staining on the right side (passenger side) of the fuel tank. Let us know how it goes.
