Default Horrible Noises from Leeroy (EDIT 1/6)

Everything has been working so well since I replaced the alternator and cleaned up some contacts. Well, except for the front splash shield dislodging itself and then running itself onto the tire at 85....

But, as is the case with 30 year old cars that have not been completely restored, occasional issues crop up.

Today, driving to work, I notice a growing noise. High pitched at idle with the clutch pedal out, but changing to a lower sort of metallic grinding noise when the clutch is depressed. You cannot hear it as much or at all when you are at speed.

Ideas? Comments? Jokes? Put Downs? Degenerate reprobate answers?

I think I know what it is, and I am not happy as I was JUST in there to pin the TT bearing back. One is a 7 dollar part that takes 2 hours to get to, and the other, from what I have heard, could possibly be NLA on its own.

The lower grinding one is probably the release bearing.

The higher one could be the pilot bearing, or one of the TT bearings. If the pilot bearing hasn't been changed in an unknown time period, change it anyway, as they're cheap, and if they destruct, then they weld bits of themselves to the crank and/or the short shaft through the clutch.

Wasn't someone (Roger?) investigating replacement bearings for the dual and single disk clutches? (they're held on by a circlip IIRC)

Sounds like throwout or pilot bearing.

Yes - those are the two parts that I was thinking of as I turned off the car during lunch so they could hear me order my Dell Beef Burritos.

Sounds like release bearing and not pilot bearing although I have seen disintegrated pilot bearings cause weird symptoms.

I lucked into a new DD TOB a few months ago (wanted a spare for the stroker) and just got it back from Roger after sending it to him for measurements/ look-see. Hopefully it will lead to a good replacement product soon.

I have changed the pilot bearing on my 83s years ago. The bearing came apart and left just the outer race. I fought that thing for days trying this and that. I finally spoke with my 928 guru at the time. He said to come and get his special tool. Took 5 to 10 seconds once I was back under the car. Of course I had the clutch and other stuff out of the way. That was a job that started out looking easy but turned out to be the hardest one I ever tackled. If the sound changes when you press in the clutch, I would bet on the throwout bearing.

Best of luck,

Brendan, if you don't already have one, I have a proper 1/2" pilot bearing puller if you're going to go in after the noises. Holler and I can toss it in the mail.

I could use one of those in my tool box. The bolt / nut / screwdriver trick works fine, but just not the right way to do it.

Remember kids, let the new pilot bearing sit in the freezer for a few hours (or longer) before installation.

I had a similar noise when I first bought my car. It was a slight grinding when the clutch was pushed in. 4 days after I got the car, the noise turned to a terrible SCREAM every time the clutch was pushed in (T/O bearing siezed), about 6 fingers broke off the pressure plate, which somehow threw the release fork off the slave cylinder resulting in no clutch release. Interesting part was what I found when I cut open the bearing: the ball bearing cage had broken, and a small piece of it was wedged under a ball. Spun fine after the piece was removed I guess the moral of the story is if there is an abnormal noise, don't wait to fix it

I have not checked out the car, but its in the driveway and I took my wife's acura. I have come to the conclusion that it is probably the TOB. But what I do not know is if it may have affected other pieces of the clutch assembly. I may dig into it soon. A thread I read mentioned that as the bearing seizes it may break the spring arms on the pressure plate. I hope not.

I hope one of the Leeroy clauses was "must be returned or forwarded in driving condition".
C'mon Brendan, ya better man up and fix this.
I understand you are frustrated. Give it a week to cool off, recruit a couple wrench-hands, and then tackle this problem head on!
