Timing belt now installed with many thanks to Roger from 928srus and Dwaynes great writeup. I feel like I am on the home stretch now and it feels pretty dang good. I hope to have the intake back on next week and hopefully the car will soon run again. My brother says it will never run again. LOL One thing I am wondering about is how long will the car need to get sorted out after I start it. I know a lot of guys say it takes about a 10 minute drive for the brain to adjust back to normal from the vaccum leaks(my flappy valve was not even hooked up). Will running through rev ranges in the garage for 10 minutes do it or does it actually need to be driven?

Most of the time after this kind of work they start and run fine, excepting maybe a very short time for the lifters to pump up. I rarely have seen any evidence of ECU "learning". Enjoy.

It should idle smoothly from the get go and you could drive it immediately, but when you first start up you will be checking for leaks and running it to operating temp (to check for leaks) with heater on, in the garage, right? There is your ten minutes. Don't quote me, but IIRC it takes about 30 or 40 minutes for the computers to complely settle, but it not something you really notice. If the engine is not warm, it will feel sluggish for sure.

Thanks guys, The main thing I am hoping for is a low smooth idle. At startup it would go to about 1800rpm's for a few minutes before settling back down to about 900rpms. I believe I read that 600 should be normal from the start.

Finally drove the car today. The new MM's made a world of difference. Pretty cool to see that big engine rocking in its cradle. I can not say it runs any different after the TB and intake refresh but I have a better piece of mind. I can not drive it long because there is no exhaust past the x pipe. Hopefully my exhaust parts will be in today. I will do some detailing this weekend and hopefully be able to cruise by next weekend. Right now I just sneak (yea right) around the block before someone calls the cops. If you have never heard a 928 with no exhaust it is down right scary.

Took the car out on the highway for the first time. Only took it to half throttle but Wow. I know I did somethings right because it feels like an entirely new car from the first drive when I purchased it. I am running just the X-pipe right now. I hope I do not lose any power when I put the full exhaust on because right now the car feels amazing. I can not even imagine what a supercharged one feels like. When Jeremy from Top Gear made the qoute "this is the kind of car that wants to go out and eat a tractor, for fun",,, Now I know exactly what he meant! Oh, and on the GT antenna, I know it is not stock but I just had to have it.

i find it a bit odd that he refers to his timing belt as a chain.... curious.

nah, i was just kidding about that.. but about 6 months ago i decided to go the opposite route of One of Twenty (Twenty opens 10 to 20 threads each day and creates a lot of clutter... i prefer to only start a thread when i think i have an super-interesting topic. this hardly qualifies. but in this case i found Mr. Cobb's choice of words, a bit odd.

I just ran accross this thread and thought I would bump it up as a two year anniversary of 928 ownership. I learned a lot in those first few months and tons more since then thanks to the great people around here. Major updates to the car since this thread have been Turbo Twist wheels and Supercharging.

Just over three years now with a Shark. A couple additions in the last year have been going to Stage 2 supercharger, new lloyd mats, and putting in a 928 sport steering wheel. It has been a long process but I feel like my hotrod is finally ready to turn the key and go anywhere. Just got the AC going and a front bumper repaint. The Supercharger system is completely installed and running great. Most of the leaks and common mechanical issues have been taken care of. There is always more to do but damn it feels good to have the car where I always wanted it to be.

I thought I would add a clip of the exhaust note to this thread. I live in muscle car land and I get comments about everyday how amazing it sounds. The rumor is around that someone has a Chevy powered Porsche in town. Funny.
