Default Possible 928 purchase

Hi guys, Looking for some advise on a 87 928S4. It is a red 5 speed with black interior, so I believe it to be a very desireable car. I will be doing an inspection and drive possibly on Mon. It has 109,000 miles. What words of wisdom can you tell me before I look at the car and maybe take the plunge into 928land?

That won't be possible. I will be the only person there impersonating an expert. LOL. I do have descent knowledge of cars and can turn a wrench.

Okay give us more details--location, price, options, etc. Also, check the First Time Forum info; there is a list of PPI items.

Red/black is only desirable if that is a color combo YOU LIKE! TONS of them around...so very common and not rare in the least.

You won't have to worry about Thrust Bearing Failure on a 5spd car so that is nice.

You will want to know when the T-belt was done, A/C condition and when the steering rack was done. If the A/C works and has had NO REPAIRS then that would be VERY RARE, and probably about to blow ALL its seals (lol) and same for the steering rack. If the A/C has been "fixed" then it will be broken again soon...unless they are gutted and EVERY FREAKING SEAL is replaced they won't hold refrigerant. Just they way they are. Rear A/C units just make it even worse.

If it needs paint and interior just pass on it unless you can STEAL IT! Seriously getting an interior and paint job up to show quality (which is the ONLY way I will have my 928's) is VERY expensive! (Depending on how far you want to take it I guess)

I think other than A/C, Timing Belt, and Steering racks I have not done anything to my cars. Oh, if it has crazy electrical gremlins and you are NOT a Double E, then pass on it! When you get to the S3 and newer cars (ie. US 85 and newer) if they have electrical problems they can be a BEAR to fix!

Spend a little time at the thread at the top of the 928 forum. Full of all sorts of information that will make think you've slept at a 928 Holiday Inn Express. I'd ask some questions then if you have any left.

Only buy a 928 if you really really want to own one and care little or nothing about resale value, "good deals" and low repair costs. It is very very easy to spend thousands of dollars sorting out a neglected 928 a great hobby, can be fun, but a poor investment based on dollars alone. You have to love the car !! And love is an EMOTION which by definition is NOT rational or logical !!!!

^^^ This advice is important to having a good experience, regardless of how many 944 timing belts or 968 relays you might have changed. Very different vehicle.

Thanks for the links and advice. Has anyone here owned a 968 6 speed coupe as well as a 5 speed S4. I am wondering how they will compare. I would think the 928 would kill it on the open highway but lower track speeds the 968 should hold its own. Does that sound accurate. I did look at 928's before the 968 purchase but decided I wanted a S4 manual. As you know they are not cheap but this one is priced very reasonable. I hope the car represents itself well when I drive it. If it does I will probably bring it home as it is priced at I think a good price. As all of you know though, pictures can be real decieving. I guess I will find out tommorow. It is about a 200 mile drive to go check it out.

There's a lot of info on everything you asked about if you use the search button and be specific. Like "928 vs 968", etc.

I doubt you'll get much traction without providing any info on the car.

Hope it's all you're expecting and buy it fairly.

The 356 did not work out. It was a compete basket case that needed a complete restoration. Looked nice in the pics untill you seen the car in person. That is why I am skeptical of any pics.

The problem I am going to have is when I am there it is either pay the guy and drive it home, or go home and not do the purchase. Since I am driving that far I do not want to make the trip twice. $9500 is the asking price. The miles seem reasonable for the year. The guy has driven it about 4000 miles since he has owned it. The interior and body seem to be nice for the age. No dings or dents but he says the paint is showing its age. I will not buy it if the paint can not be brought back to acceptable street looks. I am not expecting a show car at the asking price but paint jobs are too expensive. My threshold is, if it presents itself well from 10 ft that is what I am expecting. Stuff like rebuilding a PS rack I can do myself for not much money. Mechanically he says it will drive home fine.

AC is weak but that is not a big deal for me. This is a car to enjoy so I do not need to drive in the heat anyway.
