Question: My buddy and I just became 928 owners. His ignition key is the red one - m/y 1985. My ignition key is the longer black one - m/y 1981. Which is correct? Also, can you get a spare made at a Porsche dealer or ?
I'm thinking it is the black longer one.
Thanks,
Mark

928 keys come in two distinct lengths from the “shoulder” to the tip of the key.
25 mm (short) regular, and 35mm(long)
The long is used to control the optional fitted alarm (1980? +)
Recommend you go to www.keys4classics.com for your spare and follow recommended instructions......

The only "easy" way in is to order the key and wait...
The three not-so-easy methods that I know of are:
1) the magic "?" tool, I am skeptical of that with later cars because there is a metal shield in there, protecting the lock from such things... Worth a try, however.

Will mess with it tomorrow. Wally PM'd me something to try. Thanks Wally. Will give that a shot and see if it works.
Also going to try a 34 mm socket.
Only time since I have owned the car that I have left both keys in it. Is all my inner tie rods fault... if it would not have been bad car would have kept extra key in my pocket. Merry Christmas to me I guess.

We do that a lot at the NASA events..ppl lock in keys all the time.
A wedge and two airbags...you can get a frame open about 4" and wont hurt nothin. Lots of spring across 4-5' of door frame from the hinges to the upper edge.
You can pull glass out a couple inches as well, if you have to.

No telling how many cars I have unlocked in the last thirty years, and the bags are the first tool I grab.

Mine did that once, the day after we got back from 3rd Coast.
George M had stayed at the house while we were trying to figure out what was going on with his car, I went out and started my 928 and it locked itself while running.
Good thing I keep a spare in my billfold.

Brad, is the car still up at Sears? I can be there in two minutes and get you started in 10.

I have a ? tool, and plan to practice on my parts car while the door is still around and half apart.
Amazing how persuasive those little air bags are, makes me wonder why anybody bothers with an alarm system or door locks.

We've ordered keys many times for 928's that have the keys locked in them.
Apparently, not all dealers know how to do this. I've had several customers come to me and tell me that they can't get their dealer to order them a key...they say it is impossible...especially for early cars.
We have never had a problem and are always able to get keys. I do think there is a VIN cut off for keys to be made, in the US. Early keys do have to come from Germany.

My 88 S4 locks and unlocks herself occasionally too, so I have learned to leave a door ajar if I leave the car running. You could wait a day or so for the car to unlock itself?
Anyway what is the deal with the mind-of-its-own central locking system on these cars? Does the trouble lie with the button switch on the console? Is it prone to arcing when old?

Sean,
Was going to head your way and it locked. No it sitting in the garage. Going to run up to Sears and grab a 34mm socket and try that before I do anything else.
Can we bypass the auto lock system so this does not happen again. Have never had it happen until yesterday. Lesson learned!

I can hardly bear to read these door locked threads anymore. There is never a reason to break out a window or come up through the floor etc.
The fish hook tool works all the time. Just maker sure the locksmith has one, and if not, call another one. There are many prior threads cited in this one that demonstrate what it looks like and how it works.

Linder,
Attempted bills trick with the coat hanger. Actually made 4 different ones, have now had success in spliting the window seal (semi-dry rotted to start). Can say none of you have to worry about me stealing your 928 utilizing the coat hanger trick. Does not want to turn once you slide the hanger down below the window. I can feel it clear the window but wont turn in towards the car so that I can lift.
Will grab a 34 mm 12pt socket somewhere... sears did not have one. May try HF or Northern Tool.
One locksmith told me he could not do it, waiting on another to call. If that does not work, will resort to glass guy and pull passenger side rear window.
Again appreciate all your help.
