To Side Molding or Not?
Been shopping 928's and have just began noticing that some have the side moldings and others don't. Trying to figure out which I prefer...
Which way do you like it and why?

the more important question is what way you like it.
Some like the less cluttered look as that was the original design,
The side strips are functional if you park in a lot of parking lots.

Personally I wouldn't focus on the rubstrips, I would focus on the mechanical and cosmetic condition of the car.

On or Off
If you do purchase a 928 that you really like and it has the rubstrips, by all means keep them. If you ever decide to repaint the car, you can always take them off, but you will need fill in the holes on the doors, & fenders. You can also reinstall the rub strips at a later date with a good double sided tape. T

There are SO MANY other things to worry about would be about the VERY LAST thing there! You are going to find cars that vary SO MUCH that when you find one that is nice and meets all your needs but is the opposite way from what you like...you better STILL buy that car. If it comes time to repaint, take them off if you have them on and don't like them or add them if you do... No biggie. In pics I think the rub strips don't look all that great, in person I barely even notice them and I think they follow the line of the car quite well. My cars mostly have them but a few don't.

Not to hijack my own thread but could you possibly have that many 928's at the same time? I was thinking about this as we just exchanged pm's...
If so I am in complete awe. Awe of the addiction that is ;-)
3 of the early 80's
2 of the 84-85
1 S4
2 GTS
How much variation could there be and don't you want to spread the love around to other P-cars? I must say it is great to be in the pressence of what must be 928 royalty!

Well, I don't know if YOU can, but I DO! LOL! It is a pretty crazy sickness I have going on here! I did this with guns, guitars, R/C airplanes, Lionel trains...all at various times throughout my life. I think they have a name for it! OCD! LOL!

I actually like the body side moldings. There are not too many car in history that have them as an integrated part of the styling. For some, like myself, the 928 body without the molding looks a little too bulky. The moldings divide the body to 2 halves visually hence transforming it sleeker. In general, body side moldings and pin stripes are things in the past. Having them on a modern cars are tacky. But liking the 928 from day one, I have looked at the moldings as an enhancement and that idea has stuck. In fact, the early 928GTS did not have the moldings and I was somewhat disappointed then. Bottomline, just personal preference.

I think I agree and prefer them. Just like the strong character line down the side of early BMW's (and even the modern attempt) the line does give the car a sense of purpose, an edge or sharpness that is lacking with out.

Three Wheelin'
As my 928 goes in for a bump & full re-spray this winter I'm contemplating taking my strips off....... but it scares the hell out of me. The reason? I'm going in for a bump & full re-spray! I counted 23 hash marks on my BSM and am not even mentioning the body corner creases, dents and dings from old ladies in Buicks, red-necks in pickemups and hockey moms in SUVs with 200# doors that swing 50" out into your sleek and low ALUMINUM doors.
There. I made up my mind (or talked my self into it) I'm keeping the strips! As every one else says though, it's the last thing to worry about in your plans to purchase a 928.

I hope nobody is offended here, I do not like the strips at all. Don't get me wrong, I have seen tons of cars that have them and still look WAY better than my car, but the strips themselves, not a fan.

If/when I do a repaint on EURO85 I'll remove them... I don't mind them but given an easy opportunity and the fact that I always park in handicap spots I can really get away with it.

If you take them off, you get really particular about where you park.
I think they look better with out them, but that is just me.
I took mine off.
Do not let any one kid you about what it takes to take them off, it is a big deal to repaint a car, and that is what you end up doing.
