Rog,

I'm not specialist of 944, but I've had the same idea some time ago (because of my worn old ones and the stronger steel gears) and been told that it won't work (cause of diameter or no. of teeth?).

Then I should keep this box of flycut 5L pistons and rings.
Yep - and in the worst case, you can always use the pistons as ashtray

With the focus the German brands - MB, BMW and Porsche - have on their heritage lines and restoration capability, I'd think continued support for these cars and others is in the plan. That doesn't mean it will be economically reasonable for a lot of us, but the parts will be there.

That said, I really need to hunt down some 914 weatherstripping. Doh!!

Future is cloudy.

I kick myself because I really don't have any definitive information on whether the 944/968 gears are the same and my wife's 968 is now sold so I can't check. It looked to me like the belt had the same size and spaced HTD teeth as the 928. I am not sure whether the sprocket has the same number of teeth though. I would be surprised, because why would Porsche make differing tooth numbers for both the cam and crank gears, but Porsche has done lots of weirder stuff.

I believe there was a change on the 85 and on 944 to a style similar to the 928. The earlier 944's did not even have the triangular hub behind the gear. '85 and later 944/968 have the same hub as the 928 does (928 105 459 00). That means the later 944/968 camshafts are the same diameter and same size key and the three adjustment holes are in the same place on the gear. The 928 cam gears have 48 teeth, is that correct?

So does anyone know how many teeth the 16V 944/968 gear (944 105 545 12) has? Even though that one may also be NLA, it would help to find an aftermarket one that may already be being made and/or help increase the volume of gears that are custom-made for us and lower the per unit price. Also, that one is steel, so used ones may also work much better than the 928 magnesium/aluminum ones.

Hi Roger,

they look similar but they are different. 944 16V cam gears won't work, the only thing that is the same is the hub behind the cam gear.

I compared an old 928 32V and 944 16V TB. The width and distance of the teeth ist exactly the same. The 944 uses a different ignition rotor, it uses spacers on the allan bolts.

The standard 944 8V cam gear is smaller in width and so is the TB.

I am waiting for the machinist to get back to me with those prices
on both alu & Ti
depending on how much the cost is and depending on if anyone besides me wants any spare gears, thats how many I will tell him to cut.
Titanium could be $800 a gear as it will be aprox 4 times as much for the material, BUT I will let everyone know as soon as he gets back to me with the prices.

Where are you getting Ti thats only 4x the price of aluminum? We pay $2.00/lb for 6061, about $26-40.00/lb for Ti 6al4v. It also cuts at about 10% of the speeds and feeds for 6061.
I need your Ti source.....could save us some serious money!

AutoAtlanta appear to be selling both Genuine and Rebuilt(?) cams, although nowhere near Roger's price of $111 in 2009.

I have a number of quotes which will allow me to sell at about $125 a cam gear.
Just had a meeting with my "expert" where we discussed the issues of machining from solid billet v forged and came up with a number of mods to make the whole thing bullet proof.
Should be in production shortly.

you may be right.
it is a guess on my part until he gets back to me, but it sounds like Roger has it all under control anyway.
I will not go any further then the quote if Rogers source comes through.

That is actually a very good price on these gears.
