LS, Got it. That Benz started out life as an E-320, was shipped crosstown (Zuffenhausen) to Porsche and they did their thang. It emerged as a modified 500E (US designation for years 92-93, the 94-95's were E500's) with a 325hp motor, flared fenders, etc, etc. It was then shipped to the states. The 1st owner then shipped it to RennTech Perf in FL and the car was highly modified inlcuding a 6.0L motor, large Brembo brakes, 19" BBS Wheels, S/S Headers, etc, etc. It was a great performing sedan to say the least. It had a traction defeat button on the dash, and when applied, all hell broke loose when you hit the happy pedal on a cool day. Intitally it was debadged and virtually no body knew what the heck it was. Had some serious fun with Vipers, M5's, 911's and Z06's that I would harass on our nations freeways. They only imported 1505 units to the US over a 3 year period. I think it was the only production car co-produced by Mercedes and Porsche & it was one kick *** sedan-even with 4 people in it. T

I do plan on keeping the GTS motor stock whether it stays in the car or goes into storage. I am still on the fence about installing the LS376/480 but am leaning toward doing this conversion. My buddies shop is a little slow in Feb & Mar, and we will be needing a lift for approx 1+ weeks. If we are do decide to do this conversion, we will order the motor & conversion kit in early Feb & hopefully install it in late Feb or early Mar, 2011. T

If you really want to do something special, contact Mercury Marine for a 1st generation (ok, technically 2nd gen) ZR1 motor from 90-95. Then have them do the "Black Widow" package on top of that. Good for close to 500bhp, maybe more this time around.

Last time I talked to my friend in the Corvette world they still had a few mothballed in a warehouse.

Looked into that motor. Think the LS3 is the latest and greatest and emmisions friendly in all states. Also like the aesthetics with the same color as car painted engine covers. T

It's usually the weakest link that goes and it sounds like the thrust bearing and flex plate might be the culprits. Thats one of the reasons I want to go with the LS3 480 hp motor vs the LS3 515hp motor. I really like it a whole bunch when things stay together. Roger has mentioned to me that most of the performance nuts who are installing superchargers, turbo's, stroker motor's, etc are doing it the the automatic cars because they can take the extra juice. I had the same transmission (I think) in my Mercedes/Porsche E-600 Renntech that was producing approx 550 hp at the crank, and the transmission and rest of the drivetrain held up just fine, and believe me, I did not pamper that car. T
I've got 600+ rwhp and 600+ rwftlb with a stock '87 5 speed with LSD, with no problems so far. I've got street tires, though. With street tires, my belief (not a fact) is that the manual transmission will do fine unless you let it overheat.

No that's fine I was just commenting in case the only reason you didn't like it was because it's horrible seeing water sloshing around inside it. If you don't like the look of the thing full stop it doesn't matter whether it's got water in it or not.

B, My brother Mike has the only 1995 MB E-500 in the USA, and lives up your way in Boston. T

Tony,
I can't wait to see the LS3 installation pictorial. You do plan to document the entire conversion, right?

Plan on driving the 928 after it gets out of paint and then decide if this conversion is the way to go. T

I have read this whole epic thing..!
And I still haven't understood why T doesn't supercharge his lovely GTS.
Its a proven technology.
It gives more power than the Chevy motor.
Its a cheaper alternative.
It wont really affect the value of the car I believe.
Imagine ab 9-10 grand spent and maybe one weekend wrenching:
600 hp ready to be unleashed...!
Ok now please tell me why you rather do the Chevy conversion?
Cheers and good luck with whatever you end up doing.

The stock motor does run great and has only 38,000 miles on it. I have researched supercharging it, turbocharging it, storking it, and also the LS3 conversion. Don't plan on tracking this 928 or, so is the extra juice really needed? The one thing I do like about the LS3 conversion-this motor has a 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty. That's hard to overlook. If I were to roast this motor, I would probably lean toward the LS376/480 conversion of the choices above. T
