I had a friend back in the day that had a '68 Chevelle SS with a 396 in it also. He had it set up for drags with a ladder bar rear suspension; 3.91:1 Posi gears; 4-speed; light front end with inner fenderwells removed.

He ran into some financial difficulties and had to sell it. We worked at a service station and a potential buyer showed up for a test drive. My buddy did the driving and smoked the tires for about 100' to warm them up and pulled the front wheels (off the ground) during his 1/4 mile (approx.) speed run on a side road. When they returned, the potential buyer (with noticable wet spot in front) got in his car without saying a word and left... he didn't return. Literally scared the **** right out of him!

928's are TOP END cars... Muscle Cars are LOW END GRUNT cars and will beat the snot out of you in stoplight-to-stoplight runs
-EVERY TIME.

As others have said, throw some turns in to the race or make it a 1-2 mile race and you will have a chance... maybe.

This bit of REALITY..."The 1984 928S by the book was 15.2" ....pretty much says it all. The 2011 Mustang runs under 14 seconds....WITH THE BASE V-6 ! yep 3.7 liters of V-6 "muscle car" 300 HP and has a six speed trans and gets 30 MPG. Still looks like a Mustang......

I agree 100%, 12's versus 13's is a major difference and I'd suggest the majority of guys who say they're in the 12's are not really. The difference of doing 12's once and "in the 12's" is like chalk and cheese.

I rode in a friends 1970 Chevelle 454 cubic inch in high school. He punched it right in the middle of our small Oklahoma town and we went very fast ,very loudly in a very short amount of time. I thought I was definitely going to die. Gunar

I'm with Dr. Bob, make it a 5 mile drag race.

Or run a 1/4 mile drag race weighted for the one who can come to a stop shorter and sooner after the mark. He'll have to go over the line slower than seventy to have a chance. So you'll have a chance to match his et.

Lots of current street cars run "in the tens", only because the race is over at 1/8 instead of 1/4 mile. The shorter passes let the less-than-perfectly-prepared cars do a lot o smokings and farting without as much risk of higher-speed "upsets". I've also known forlks who might get a single hot 11.99, and that would somehow make it an "11-second car". I drove a valid mid-12's car on the street for a year or so back in the day. That's mid-12's with street tires and full quiet exhaust, the same way it showed up at random stoplights. I had no trouble smushing the "10 second" cars, which always "needed" something like plugs or a tail light bulb, something that was holding them back a couple car lengths.

seriously, if the Chevelle has to run in reverse you'll beat him...after the first 30ft or so!! Even if he ran "regular" tires, he can get out of it and back into it and still spank you.

FWIW, if you're going to do it anyway, talk as much crap as you can about how much faster your car is and get him boiling, lay a smokey brakestand in the bleech-box, point to him like he's going down when you line up, then redlight to scare him you got the jump and at least have some fun...then when you pull up to him after getting decimated, roll down the window with some Mozart blasting.

Have fun!!

Based on the shot, though, looks like that car would make it in the 11's on a drag strip.

There are so many issues, I had a 67 GTO with HO engine and a 3.08 rear end and it would go 160mph but was not a drag car.Good Luck

I had fun yesterday on VIR being behind an 850 hp Cobra Svt Terminator. Through the turns I was much faster, but once we would get to the straight the Cobra's hp really pulled. It was probably the fastest car I have ever been behind, when he punched it the car literally riped a hole in time. Absolutely incredible power. You will lose against the Chevelle in a straight line, but throw some twisties in and you'll at least own him in the corners.... until the road straightens.

I know, I can't count how many times i have had folks at my shop that tell me with a straight face (because they actually believe it) these huge power claims they got from a motor they built.

Been there , done this. Years ago, before I supercharged the car.

Make it a flying mile drag race. You didn't say f your car was an automatic or a manual. I'll assume it is an automatic.

1: Install a shift delay switch. This will wind your gears out and will not shift until you hit Aprox 5800 RPM fpr each gear. I hope your car is in good shape and the timing belt is tensioned properly.

2: Set the firmnes on the tranny to it's hardes posstion.

3: Fill it up with 103 octane racing gas.

4: He's going to be real worried about getting busted by the cops, as he is used to going two blocks and shutting it down. So he will be prone to making a mistake.

5: He'll sit and smoke the tires being over anxious due to the length of the race, so you will get out in front of him.

6: Once he is ahead, and he could be, he'll most likely push it too hard and over rev it, once he sees you catching him in the rearview mirror, and he'll likely bend a push rod.

No matter what, you will get props from him.

Good luck.

By the way, as a confidence builder for yourself.

Take the spare tire, jack and tool kit out of your car. If you have a subwoofer box and amp take those out too along with anything else that happens to be laying loose in the car.

Don't fill the tank. Instead just have enough 103 octane to get to where you are racing and back to the closest gas station. By the way, you'll be surprised at how much more you will be thrown back into your seat with the 103.

At 10 lbs. a gallon and the weight of the other things you remove, will save in excess of 200 lbs. off the weight of your car increasing your power to weight ratio.

I would also recommend racing at a drag strip with a flying mile!
