Ask your friend if his Chevelle can beat a twin turbo 650HP C5 corvette? When he says.."no way"...show him this video of my stock 1984 928 automatic passing the 650hp corvette....

the he'll balk....so show him this one....of the same 84 928 automatic catching a 2009 Viper ACR (600HP)...I also pass a sweet Shelby GT350 in the video too....

I wouldn't drag race him.....

For drag racing, I think the #1 problem for the 928 is the total gear ratios from flywheel to the outer diameter of the tire. It'll take a long, long time before the 928 is anywhere close to rpms where it makes a meaningful amount of hp.
Custom gears, new wheels and tires, and a positive displacement supercharger would most likely make the original poster competitive. I am ball park guessing that the Chevelle will run 12s, pulled that one out of my a$$. There aren't very many 928s out there that run 12s.
Has anyone run 11.xx 1/4 mile with a 928?

I beg to differ. I think that at least stock S4 is great at shifting all that weight on it's fat ***, as long as tires are good. If you have road racing suspension, not so much. And of course purpose built drag cars will always be different (i.e., better).

I would be timid with my S/C car going up against a big block Chevelle with 4:10 rear end in the 1/4. I would race him on the highway any day of the week though

Certainly looks like the figures are stacked against me. I would be racing on a strip of course (lebanon valley in NY), there are very few places around here where open road would work anyways. Funny part will be if we do go through with the race and he drives the chevelle over there - not the most streetable car.

Only chance is if he sit's there and spins! You would have a hard time betting modded GTI Rabbit VW! Ask me how I know! The 928 is a dog out of the whole. It is tough to launch. It is a dog or it spins! Get some drag radials, or just one!

Tell him you have to do spark plugs and wait till you are ready.
You are comparing kiwi to apples here as he has a big block and you don't, BUT in a short time with some simple mods you could do it if you really want to.

The Chevelle should be in the low 13's in the 1/4 mile and that is a pretty conservative estimate. The 1984 928S by the book was 15.2
2 seconds at the end of the 1/4 mile at 90 - 100 mph is 16 car lengths.
It's going to be a massacre!

I have no doubt that mine would have gotten into the 11's with a good set of slicks and some suspension work to improve the 60 foot times.
I guess what I am trying to say is that it is hard to keep a street drivable car like a Chevelle in the mid 12's or faster.
I was running a 3800 stall that would flash to over 4 grand, so that helps and hurts at the same time.
Many good parts, Merlin heads, bigger valves, RHS porting, 250 shot, etc.
