My experience is not with the 928, but I can tell you that when you mod the engine you have to take into account the rest of the drive line.
It is really cool the the benz trans will handle 500+ hp (so i've heard) but traction will need to be increased.
On my US Iron I used traction bars, pinion snubber and a strong gear set. After that it would break u-joints and shred tires, so I upgraded.
Then it twisted the driveshaft off (upgraded). blew planetarys in the trans, (upgraded trans).
Turned up the power, had to much traction off the line, drivers frt wheel lifted about a foot higher then the passenger side and buckled the car.
My Point ... It is all about balance. Do it right from front to rear or it is a waste of effort, time, and money.
IMHO 450 FHP should be lots for the 928 and that can be done with the stock block. IMHO

So, yea there is a lot more to it than just power.
That being said, we are car guys, and to much is not enough some times.

Normal 6 liter is only stroked not bored so 100 MM pistons which means the cylinders are stock thickness. Fan and Anderson have 104/104.5 mm in the bored out not sleeved cylinders and have not had any cylinder problems normaly aspirated.

I think that depending on when the power comes on, it could be useful.

Hi
Its not the power that breaks drive trains its HOW you send that power TO the drive train...
I have run more hp than anyone here through my drive train ...a conservative estimate is 990 hp....and nothing broke...
BUT... the reason nothing broke is the Maxx Extreme Race Electronic controller that puts the power in TOTALLY smoothly....
I am not sure thats possible with Stroking or Supercharging, as you just cannot get that degree of control....
All the best Brett

On stroking and forced induction: Not worth the cost. One can make 1000 hp from 5L on pump gas with no problem, look at what the 951 crowd does. And the factory forgot to add 8 valves to those engines. Any more cubes will mainly add torque at the lower revs, but since with 5L boosted one can already hits 600 wheel ft-lbs at about 3500 rpm I question the need. Especially given that more will require sticky tires and then 5-speeds start blowing up.
Now, if you have a recipe for a reliable 10k rpm 928 engine, keep talking...

I agree with most, once you start getting into the mid high 400 rwhp range traction is going to be the biggest issue to contend with. The most economical way to get there is with forced induction. At that HP these cars can take on anything out there, I believe there is a post here about a Murf stage 3 car outrunning a Yamaha YZFR1 1000cc sportbike. That takes some serious acceleration!

I like what Greg said. We are car guy's and if the funds are there why not! I most definatly would with the best parts money could buy. That said it is not like you can use it on the street with that much torque. It would sure be cool to have it though.
Power wise I think the 4.5L can give you all the usable power one would need for the street...............Just ask Hacker!
Modding is the coolest and build what you want. I would love to hear that bad boy at WOT at 100mph!
