Money No Object Head Unit....Suggestions?
The following are a list of requirements.
1. Period correct appearance.
2. Connectable to an Ipod (prefer to have control from head unit but not a must)
3. Internal Amplifier to match or exceed what factory offered with CD-2
4. Able to connect without making any splices to existing wiring in car.
Initially Nakamichi's CD500 comes to mind but I'm not sure if their head units offer an aux out for an Ipod, maybe I'm not seeing it?
Denon used to offer a nice head unit but they are NLA and the higher end units which looked period correct didn't have a built in amplifier.
Any other suggestions, can be new or used.

This can be difficult....when I bought the stereo for Sharky I wanted something that didn't look all "bling-bling" like most new stereos do....I was able to find a nice sony with a dark metal finish that fir the bill...however I don't if they still make one that looks similar

Pioneer DEX-P99RS
Pre amp only but has amazing features for anyone trying to setup a good sound stage. Once I catch up on various projects, I plan to install one of these.
FWIW, I am choosing this head unit over: McIntosh MX-406, Nakamichi CD700-Mk2, Alpine F1 and 7909LE, etc.
I like the clean classic look and outstanding audio controls.

hi end head units won't have built in amplifier capacity in general. The Denon Z1 would be the one you quoted earlier. I have one and it's a great unit, but it does not have a built in amp. One other problem with it is that it's anodized aluminum, which makes it esthetically "incorrect". Denon did make a model up from the Z1, the DCT-1, that was black anodized but it was generally available only in the far east, but it's typically very hard to find and sells for over $2k used. The last one I saw on eBay sold for over $2600. It would marry up quite nicely and if you could find one reasonably priced would be ideal. I've heard rumors that the Z1 did come in black anodized but haven't seen one myself. Nak would be a good choice, although they have suffered from quality issues. Beckers aren't in the same league as the above two IMHO.
Also, none of the above are Ipod units...I don't thing Ipods existed when they were first designed.

The Alpine CDA-117 will fit the bill quite well. However, I am not sure the requirement of no splicing of factory wires can be practical since it pretty much eliminates most head units except the OEM stuffs.

Try one of the flip out touch screen models, single DIN, Pioneer, Clarion etc.
they will have 4x50 [ ~22wRMS] a good para EQ , plenty of sound adjustabiltity.
On the large screen you can see whats going on. Ipod will be an add on or generally now included.
Some will even have navigation as an option.
While not period, and that would be different in each country, you should be able to find one in black. When closed they are quite plain looking.
It will cover the heater controls when opened, my Pioneer has a button that when pushed the screen lays flat for 5 secs or so and then goes up again, plenty of time to adjust the heater. It does not cover the vents.
The kids enjoy watching DVDs on the screen as well. It also means it plays DVDaudio discs and of course music DVDs.
Mine, a Pioneer AVH5750 came in silver and black, of course the Pioneer scumbags didn't bring black into the little backwater we call OZ, so I have silver, grrrr
I also have a Clarion HX-D2 [has a different model # in the US] fitted, one of the best CD players, yes two units in the car!
Denon Z1 etc are all good , but unless you do speakers, amps and PROPERLY install your system [Eg sound damping/absorbing- I have about 70kg worth in my car] they are a waste of money to put straight into a car.
My first change from a JVC Hu to the Pioneer was a huge leap in sound, changing speakers and then dampening, amps, SW etc have all been big leaps forward, but the biggest bang for my buck was the HU change. The ability to EQ the system was an enormous benefit.
You will have to cut some wires for speakers and power, I don't think there would be any plug and play systems for a 928. This will mean bypassing the 928 amp, most likely a good thing and while you are at it throw away those old speakers !! Porsches idea to add alll those speaker behind you is a joke. Since when did you go to a concert and stand looking at the back wall?

I have a Nakamichi unit in my car, I sure do love the built-in 6 CD changer. It has all the inputs and outputs to do what you want with it. Some other 928'ers have them too and the look is nice with the interior.
Good luck on your search.

Thank you for the replies. Aesthetically the Becker is perfect but I'm not so sure about the sound quality.
I do realize that most of the really high end units don't have built in Amps which automatically rules out many of these. Basically I would want something that uses the original factory amps and the original connectors. The goal is to pay someone to fabricate the wiring that would allow connection to the new head unit without modification.
I'll definitely check out a few of the other suggestions.

A custom adaptor pigtail was my first thought. One end specific to OE harness, the other end specific to the head.
How about one of those discreet "anti-theft" heads where they look like a flat panel when off and closed.

Not sure if it matches your period correct, but man, I've always wanted some of their car or home audio equipment!!

Years ago, I bought a harness adapter from Stefan ( SW Stereo ). With that harness adapter and the appropriate head unit connector, I was able to make a plug-in harness adapter for my 90' S4 and aftermarket stereo head unit. I don't know if Stefan still sells them for the 928.

I prefer Kenwood. They have some great ipod head units with 200 watts of power. That will power the smaller speakers front and back. With a good small 2 channel amp in the factory external amp location, you can drive the factory woofers pretty well. If you need a sub woofer (which I don't), then you'll probably need the spare tire area for a big amp.
But the factory speakers are pretty poor, so you'll probably want to upgrade them and reuse the factory grills, and mount good quality dual cone speakers in there place.
That's basically what I did, now using a Kenwood head unit and ipod located in the glove compartment. Great sound with decent amount of bass volume. Kenwood units upload the ipod file and uses its own DAC, so the sound is much better than others. Check out the KIV head units.
