Leak at Half Shafts to Diff connections
I've looked every where using all the buzz words (axle, shafts etc) but cannot find the DIY on the rear half shafts rebuild that came with lots and lots of pictures. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Rob. I'm going to read and read this procedure with the expectation of doing it as my upcoming winter project. Mine is leaking at the tranny on both sides.

That's a great thread on pre-ABS axles. However Dayne over fills the joints with CV grease, as the WSM specifies 80g for both sides of each joint. The single boot kits I bought came with two 80g CV grease packages, so that's probably a common mistake.
I found that Pelican Parts had the best prices for CV boot kits.
After removing the axles from the car, I used the gear puller method described in this Pelican thread...

The Autozone Tool Loaner program's 5-ton puller is ideal for separating the inner joint from the shaft. Autozone also has a CV joint band clamping loaner tool that works with the later ABS axles.

If that rebuilt axle is 250 that that is a pretty good price. Boots, metal strips, etc can add up. I think the joints themselves are about 100 each.
Its too bad the later ones are not rebuildable on the outer side. I wonder how 928intl does it.

Yes, the outer joints aren't meant to be disassembled. However I saw another thread on Pelican, where a guy machined off the metal boot-mount/cover which allowed him to completely disassemble the outer joint. He then reused the cover by drilling and tapping into the joint outer race to allow installing retaining screws.

Hmmm. I have a set I wanted to try that with. Thread link? Its too hot here in San Diego to use the search.

Too hot here too. I saw two threads on Pelican, one shows the outer joint cover distructively removed, another with the machined off solution. I can't recall if those were on the 911 or 944 forums.

Camarillo - you may have me beat. There is actually a breeze today and it doesn't feel like an exhaust is blowing on you outside.

I don't think rebuilding the shafts is going to help your trans leaking issue. That is unless the shaft rebuild is just a side project to your issue with the trans leaks. Good luck with the project.

Sorry for the late reply Jim. I was away. Yes, like the other work I have done on my car, rebuilding the rear half shafts will be strictly preventative maintenance, however, I was hoping that the rebuild would also stop a leak at the diff area (both sides). I thought that the gasket between the half shaft were old and leaking but after studying Dwayne's pictures I can't see how the diff fluid would leak there. What am I missing? I have already replaced all the other gaskets around the diff incl the TT seal (last winter project).
I am copying two pics from Dwayne's write up to show what I have.

Do you have the PET?
You can replace the seals and orings easily between axle and flange, also, between flange and body of trans.
I have one apart in the basement and will snap a couple pictures if you want.
