Default Dwayne's Abbreviated TT Procedure

Hello all,
Well, work has been killing my available wrenching time for the last year due to a job change. But I've been making good progress at getting my schedule back under control and completed my first TT Bearing Replacement project.

I know that my write ups can be quite lengthy and picture intensive so I decided to turn over a new leaf and work hard at shortening my write ups.

Here's my first attempt at documenting an abbreviated TT Bearing Replacement Procedure.

Step 1. Remove the rear axle.

Step 2. Remove Transmission and TT

Step 3. Replace Bearings and Fix Things and Stuff

Installation is the reverse of the removal steps.

....and you're done!

Just having a little fun this morning.......

I hope that you also replaced the trans cooler lines as now is the time to do this just get new flex hose crimped onto the hard lines.
BTW that was a nice writeup Dwayne

No need for a lengthy writeup when you consider that its already detailed in the WSM.

Dropping the coilovers is not necessary, and might make the assembly easier to reinstall...

Hi Dan,
Yes, wife and I are planning on attending on Saturday for the day only. I'm working on her '87 TT bearing replacement and Super Clamp install right now and hope to have it complete for the drive to SF. Will you be attending and bringing one of your beauties (928's that is)?

Excellent catch, Stan. Yes, replacing those lines is a good idea. In the spirit of keeping the procedure short, I've added "Fix things and stuff" to step 3. THANKS!

I have actually been taking LOTS of pictures and may not be able to resist posting a massive picture laden procedure in the near future.....

Dwayne, that was a little too abbreviated! Good to see you back here. You've been MIA for a while.

Borland actually it is easier to drop the rear subframe with the shocks installed it is pretty well balanced if you tie the half shafts to the crosmember,
it will balance on a jack pad if done correctly installation is easy as well YMMV

But that's not how they did it in the WSM!

Of course, I insisted on doing it without dropping the rear crossmember. Not sure it was any easier.

My 'might be' vs. your 'actually it is'.... I'm not convinced unless your talking about speed of removal... Consider for a one person unassisted operation, that the assembly is much lighter in weight since you would need to remove the brake rotors for access removing the pivot pin holding the lower shock mounts.

Dwayne:

In step 2, why did you take the drivetrain out with the bellhousing still attached? That to me would seem to be much harder than just leaving the bellhousing on the engine.

Look forward to seeing you at SF10!

I will be there as well. Greg Brown is finishing up some of the engine stuff on the Zyclamrot car. It will be finished in time for SF. So yes it will be there.

Looking forward to seeing you and your wife again.

Borland the weight of the assembly isnt really an issue you dont remove the rotors, just the caliper and the E brake cable from the handle and the chassis mount (it slides out) then the top shock nuts this gets all of the rear sub frame out of the way and as previously stated it will balance on the jack pad.
I RnR a few rear Xmembers this way by myself no issues, except that the drive axles need to be tied to the lower control arms so they center the weight i was looking for a picture but i cant find it
