Default Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec vs. Kumho Ecsta XS [UPDATE: HANKOOK V12's ON TRACK]

Does anyone have firsthand experience with either of these? Or any other recommendations for tires w/ a UTQG of 180-240?

I'm going to the track tomorrow, and I know my Goodyear F1's will be toast afterward.
They were good tires, but they howl like banshees. Actually, all the tires I've run that have had narrow, "super-directional" tread blocks either howled, buzzed, or vibrated after a couple of DE's or AX's. Tires with more "traditional" blocky tread (Dunlop SP8000's; Yoko AVS Intermediate's) had much quieter road manners.

Sizes 225/45/17 & 255/40/17.

Oh, and they need to be cheap... student loans will be buying them.

Dunlop Direzza star specs are GREAT tires.....we used them in lemons racing.... great grip, incredible tread life & they last a very long time.... the cheap price doesn't hurt either....for a "street" tire they are hard to beat!!!

Hankook V12 evo's are a very good and highly rated tire for traction, grip and wear.

Hey Erik:

Andy Hollis did a shoot out test for Grassroots Motor Sports Mag a while back. Bottom line was that you could throw a blanket over the top 4.

As I recall, the Kumhos were the fastest on a dry track, but had no on limit feel & were undriveable in the wet. The Dunlops were the best last year, but had been surpassed by the others, but they can be had cheap.

Overall the favorite was the Bridgestone RE-11s. I think that the TireRack came to the same conclusion. The SCCA forum has, like, a 21 page thread on the RE-11s. Bridgestone also has the periodic $100 off promotions.

Bang for the buck, the Dunlops are probably your best bet - since you're gonna smoke 'em anyway

James

Good luck getting 2500 street miles out of the Kuhmo XS's! My rears are shot and probably don't even have that many miles on them... They are on my '92 GTS. Getting Conti's for it this coming week.

I am on my 2nd set of Dunlop Star Specs. I like em. Haven't done track with them, just street and autocross once a month year round. They are very sensitive to pressure and like it low. I run 32 cold street and 28 hot autocrossing. Running them on the street at 36 cold (factory) wore the middle of the tread prematurely at 10K miles. 32 cold before autocrossing pushed the pressure up to 40 hot and blistered the middle of the tread on the fronts.

Star Specs remind me of the great, good feeling grip that the old dunlop Super Sport Race tires had. I like them alot.

I haven't had the same tread and pressure issues as RKD. I run them quite high, and have not had any issues.

Wearing like much harder tires.

And my comment as always on Kumho is that they are soft, imprecise, and greasy when pushed.

Beware of the S. Drive Yokos as well. They were so bad I brought them back the next day.

Bridgestone has always been my pick for a Porsche. Mostly the RE model.

I totally agree and will not make the mistake of buying the "super directional" type treads anymore. They are just too damn loud. The Goodyear F1 GSD3's were the worst tire I've ever run for noise. I got rid of them way before the tread ran out because I could not live with the noise they produced.

BC, if you are running higher pressures, even the Porsche factory 36psi, please be very careful at high speeds on those Star Specs. I found them very squirmy to the point they were almost scary at triple digits on back road highways, very floaty. Also you might want to check your tread depth across the tire. I found my first set worn much more in the middle of the tread street driving at 34 psi.

At posted speeds on the street I had zero issues with the Star Specs at factory pressures, they just felt a LOT stickier than the previous PS2s.

I like these tires a lot, especially once I found the lower pressures handled so much better. Just gotta watch for those road hazzards =)

Dunlop Direzza star specs are good tires.I used them for 1 DE and they have great grip on dry. They are also a bit loud
