What radiator for race car?
#19
Well the only option I feel good about is getting a CR from 928Intl. (pm sent Mark).
Greg B is still waiting for his.
Some random thoughts:
There's no way I'm going to sit down and start bending tabs to fix a stock one. They do cool well and it's a shame to not be able to use them.
Todd's idea of adding alum end tanks would be a nice solution.
Griffin makes theirs by brazing and epoxy. It's probably not fair to lump them in the same catagory as the Old Devek/Ron Davis ones with epoxied tanks and zero warranty. I've never heard of anyone selling a Griffin for scrap value but RD.....
Lloyd, are you sure about the 55241-X part#? That looks like one with the opposite inlet/outlet placement. Do you have any pics of yours?
Thank you everyone, lots of good meaty advice here!

Mike, I have just installed a Griffin in my car, (I was told very good made in USA product) I believe it was made for a Chev V8, the in and out are in the right places, cost me $450 of my hard earned Kiwi dollars, so would be a lot less of yours, and with a little modification of hoses, I was able to use the stock hoses.
We made some new brackets using the original mounting points at the top and made a U-shape cradle underneath and mounted it on the stock bottom mounts.
Pictures not to clear but I think you will get the idea.
The white pole is our hi-tech bonnet (hood) prop. More commonly known as broom handle.

Mike, granted my car is chevy-ized so the Griffin radiator in/out is different. Dimensions are 27.5" x 15.5" and sits low. Call them and they can probably switch the hose direction and give you what you want. Buy it from them, don't go thru a catalog.

I believe you will find the Ron Davis rad to be epoxy free. I'm using three of them right now and, with proper install and care, they will perform in severe race conditions. Nothing against the other companies, just my experience with Ron Davis.

Have you had any problems with that installation? It looks like the top of the radiator is rigid between the mounts with no body flex allowed. I guess I'd have rubber grommets or something just in case something moves.
Otherwise a very nice solution.

I wondered the same. I'm not sure the radiator should be a stressed member

the only thing stressed on this job is me!! It has a small amount a clearance on that top mount and it is there to stop it lifting up ,on the other top end it sits in a u-shape bracket, no attachments, and at the bottom it just sits in the cradle, so there is allowance for any movement. the only thing actually holding it in place are the hoses
It gets the first test run on Friday, baring any unforeseen issues, and all goes smoothly, then our first full race meeting of the season on Saturday and Sunday 2/3 October.

A local Detroiter used to have a Ron Davis rad and had nothing but problems with it. They would not warranty it at all and based on hearsay of how they treated him, I wouldn't give them my business.
