"Hamburg Technic" is a phony name given to Chinese pumps. There was some detective work done about that before and included a website that was nothing but an image and listing a phony German address. The person behind the website also had a shipping record of a container from China to the US which is likely all the crap pumps on Ebay.
I can't believe were talking about this again and with the buyer of my beloved old car no less. Circlex, what are you thinking?!

To be fair, it might be the first time a German/Chinese hybrid has been discussed here, which, at least, is a novelty.

Also the first for a PO complaining about a cheap new owner

I do have the highest regard for him, cheap crap is just one of my peeves.

Just as an FYI, and not to debate a point, but, I have my Engine Guardian drive system on one of these pumps installed on Kevin & Iris supercharged S4 engine with about 3000 miles on it now, driven hard everyday and no issues at all.One thing to note though, the casting ribs are a little over sized in some spots and interferes with the socket when you are trying to tighten the bolts. When I disected all of the different water pumps that I could find, this particular brand was very alarming. It had a water pump bearing that had ball bearings in both positions, instead of a roller bearing on the pulley end...where all the load is.

If you use Ed's "Engine Guardian" system, the fact that there are no roller bearings on the pulley end will become a moot point, since Ed's brilliant idea removes all of the load from the bearing in the water pump. This water pump may work perfectly, in this application, as the remainder of the water pump seemed plenty adequate.

However, if you plan on using this water pump wtihout Ed's system...you will not be very happy when it fails at very low mileage.

I could not have said it better! Thanks Greg.

More like 3500 miles now and no issues at all. And being protected by the coupler between the roller and the water pump drive. I don't have to worry about it.
