Default 1980 Euro-S performance compared to S4

I have a 1980 euro-s that has 300 rwhp at 6,000 rpms dyno tested by Dave Lloyd, it has dual exhaust with resonators & headers. What else can I do to the car to increase performance without spending a fortune? At a weight of 3197 lbs it is light and fast, I was wondering how the performance compares to an S4 or GTS 5 spd, I realize the torque is much greater of the two cars but their weight is more too. I've never driven either of the other two cars. Any comments?

Depends, if it auto or 5-speed. If its auto, its a three speed that saps all power.. If its a 5-speed, it should be a fun car. Isn't that all the matters? For speed, even a modern v6 sedan is faster than an S4 on the street. So forget about wich is faster, and anjoy..

Define a fortunate?

Exhaust is about the only low hanging HP fruit for an early Euro S, besides basic "tuning" of spark and fuel which I am assuming you have already done? If you don't have one I would do an X pipe.

After that, maybe a set of higher lift and longer duration cams.

My euro-s is a 5spd, I know 928's are not drag racing cars unless you buy the one on ebay right now? Thanks for the replies!

My 80 Euro S is comeptitive in terms of performance with the S4 and easily handles the 85/86 US cars. The weight to HP ratio is favorable for early S cars. My car like yours has a very improved exhaust system and it really has opened up the engine, it reves like a motorcycle and hits the rev limiter so quickly, it last dynoed at 287 rwhp. It does not have the torque of the 32 valve engines so I have to drop it down a gear occasionally but that is why it has a 5 speed. Mine is about 3200 lbs compared to 3600 plus on the later cars. Which has positive effects on braking and handling. The main performance issue here is traction limitations for cars on 225/245 tires are very limited compared to my 255/295 setup. Out in the twisties my car is very hard to keep up with.

Please list these (modern N/A sedans) that are faster than s4's. Please keep it auto to auto and manual to manual. Thanks.

With 300 wheel hp and 3200 lbs, you're probably beating stock S4s.

By the way, the best easy way to compare power between engines is to average the hp between shift points. For simplicity and comparability, pick the rpm range [x,1.5*x] that gives the highest average. The engine with the highest such average usually wins, holding other things constant.

In terms of the performance modifications, by far the best bang per buck is forced induction. The N/A route is much more expensive hp/$, but I think the standard tricks there would be a bigger cam, more static compression to bring the effective compression back up, and carefully ported heads and intake manifold runners. Greg Gray would be the person to talk about on porting the two-valve heads, he's got the rare combination that he clearly knows what he's doing and is also willing to share the info.

Install early a pair of early 32V ('85-'86) exhaust manifolds. At this point, this woudl be your the best bang for the buck.

Toyota Camry V6 and Maxima V6, the list goes on and on... Even the new "base" pony cars are over 300hp...

How about power outputs, curb weights and the performance numbers?

Never mind their peak HP, what can they do in the 1/4?

This is true. HP numbers can be deceptive without other numbers such as weight. The real world figures most people are looking for are 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

Open up the exhaust and get the tune spot on! If I was looking into cam's I would do the heads at the same time. Sounds like a fun car! Pic's!

That is interesting that your car is under 3200 pounds. Did you actually weigh it?
My '78 non-sunroof 5-sp. weighs 3310 lbs (including 1/3 tank of gas, spare tire, and some of the soundproofing removed) w/ a 4.7 Euro S and the lighter 85 manifolds.

Where would that extra 100# be?

The Euros may not have door bars and bumper shocks.

I've weighed mine, on a track scale, at 3090 pounds. My A/C and spare are gone and about 1/3 tank of gas. Lighter 924 seats. It all adds up.
