Default 928 Estate wins GT3 TT AGAIN!!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbQag-koseQ

The 928 Estate braved the HEAT big time at Thunderhill today and managed a win in the GT3 class.... It was SO hot that I cut the day short....but still managed a couple good laps in the morning..... 3rd fastest TT time of the day....

Including beating a bunch of Corvettes that were mocking my M3 at the Hotel the night before.... "I remember passing that M3 last time..huh huh huh.." So I reminded him he probably did pass me in the PADDOCK...since i don't drive the M3 on track anymore....since the 928 is FASTER.... It was funny when they figured out which car I drive on track....the Twin Turbo Vette owner said to his boisterous friend... "he passed me last time, a bunch of times..you didn't pass him!" I must admit the TT Vette owner is a nice guy with a very nice custom Vette and he is a considerate driver who doesn't use his HP to block faster cars......

So I made a little video just for the Corvette guys that never passed me once all day....

I think that the impressive part is that the tach isn't too busy, it's an automatic with not hard gear changes, and now wild steerin-wheel antics or tire protest. Just a casual drive in the park, passing the Corvettes.

Nice!

That last Corvette looked like he was just out for a Sunday drive!

Good work there, Brian! I know how quick the Z06 can be, so its a testament to your driving that you are beating them...

I'd say its more a combo of a decent driver (me) that can push his car near its limits and a novice driver who is no wear near the limits of thiers (vette & most DE cars) Granted its not really fair to compare a "built" (even lemons built) race car against a street car.....it takes a serious street car to beat any real race car.....

A friend of mine in his Yellow Z06 (in previous videos, camera died today) and I have great fun chasing each other around....in the last session we were both driving "flat out" and I could not pass him.....classic battle of the lighter less powerful car that handles better vs the heavier more powerful car....he would get a big gap by the end of the main straight...I would be on his bumper by T5....then he would slowly pull away through the main straight....lap times are near identical..just accomplished different ways..... Unless he let me by or made a mistake I don't think I could pass him....since I don't get close enough on the shorter straights to out brake him... Still its fun & he drives his Z06 very well considering its a 100% street car..doesn't even have R comps....I don't want him to get R comps, as I will have no chance!!

The car makes it look incredibly easy......and it really isn't that hard.....the automatic does allow the driver to concentrate more on braking and lines....just one less thing to worry about...& the torque of the engine still allows it to pull strong even in 3rd gear..... I try a whole session using only 3rd gear (139mph gear) and ran about 4 seconds off my best for 2:14's....still enough to pass the Corvettes!!! I just tried really hard to be smooth and carry speed on the corners.....

And this is with a pretty much stock US4.5 and a 3 speed auto, right? Amazing.

Its an 84 "S" so it has the 4 speed and 4.7L engine.....but I only use two gears..2nd and 3rd....the ratios of the 3 speed I think would be BETTER..since you can manually shift to 1st and you can't in the 4 speed....

It has 85-6 headers with a straight pipe where the cat used to be, stock single exhaust intermediate muffler and a magnaflow single muffler out back.... Heres my latest dyno sheet and its racing weight is about 3050lbs

How much weight have you stripped out of that 84? You were pulling about even with that M coupe in the straights and ripped right past that carrera and Exige. Those are all low 13 second quarter mile cars!

thats only because they lifted to let me by!!! The club rules are very clear "if you get caught from behind, the other car is faster than you, the faster car ALWAYS has right of way!"...so they could have used their greater HP to hold me off on the straight, but the vast majority of drivers in this club (NCRC) are very good about watching their mirrors and letting you by....

The car has a dry weight of 2794lbs (no driver almost empty tank, but all other fluids) & its typical racing weight is around 3050lbs..... I would guess it can run mid 14's in the 1/4 mile....about the same as a stock S4 automatic..

Seems like you are getting a hell of a lot of satisfaction racing what started out as a rough basic 84 auto.

I mean, this is a rescue story. Instead of reupholstery and paint, you did a racing set up.

You certainly don't seem disenchanted that it doesn't have 340 hp. Some lessons must be in here somewhere..

340whp would be nice.....but I do think its best for new drivers-racers like myself to start out with a lower powered "momentum" car....since HP can teach bad habits...

HP is only 1/3 of the performance "triangle" as I look at it....and I would say its the least important of the 3 (weight is in the middle of all three and matters to everything)....handling and braking are far more important....Most 928 racers that have a built 928 racer that spend the $$$$ on a hotrod motor gain a couple seconds at most.....so the jump from say 300whp to 400whp is about 1-2 seconds...400-500 is even less maybe 1 depending on track.... However 200-300 would be a larger gain..maybe 3-4 tops....

yep Anderson and I both drove the estate and had a blast. sure the lap times are much slower than our normal cars, Mark A having 520rwhp and me at 372rwhp. remember, I have been the most recent to be a regular at many tracks to see what the hp change alone will do. 55hp was about 1.5 seconds easy. Im sure another 100hp would still be another 2 seconds. i do think that the gains after 400whp are much less noticable, as the lap times improve much less. this can be seen by the guys I race with that used to have 250rwhp and now have over 520rwhp and are only a couple of seconds faster than me now. (on the same DOT tires). Then, there are the guys with less hp, running real expensive slicks that can run this same time with only the tire change. still the best bang for the buck is the right tires.
